Here is what people are saying about the Tokyo X by Shunji Ohkura, ISBN 4770027389
4 Star Rating  "Interesting Documentary Work"2007-06-12

Shunji Ohkura combines abstract and documentary images to illustrate a bleak view of Tokyo in the midst of social decline. The images are stark and beautiful, ironic and satirical.

I don't usually 'read' photo books. I don't really have a background in photography either. That being said, this book communicates its message very well. This book is not about paranoia or about "big brother" - though there is an element of servellance that does concern the author/photographer.

Instead, what he sees is a country that has been, literally, bombed out of its mind. I've heard Japan described as, "The first post-apocalyptic society," and Tokyo X is a great document to prove that statement. There is the hint of a past, but that past doesn't really connect to the Japan of today. There is a future, but that future has no soul, and the people living in present day Japan are simply not connected to anything except the flimsy ideas of trends, fashion, and being "modern". Its a very fascinating book, well worth looking over.

This book has beauty, yet its scary. How the men and women dress, I would have never imagined these images. The peircings, the make up. Scary.

This book is an amazing look at Japan. Anyone interested in photography or Japan should at least take a look.
