Listening to this album is like swallowing packet upon packet of Sweet'n'Low, it has the same texture and subtlety.

I've listened to plenty of experimental music and electronica, and after listening it through for the first time, I decided that it wasn't just boring, it was also annoying as hell.

I've given it a couple more tries, just to come to the same conclusion.


You are better off listening to:

-Magnetic Fields
-Massive Attack
-Nobukazu Takemura
-Shugo Tokumaru
-hell, even Stars

Don't be like those schmucks who ignorantly defend Vida La Vita. Expand your horizons. Listening to good music makes you a happier person.

With the exception of a few meandering segments in its latter half, Yoshimi remains the pinnacle of Lip's art-vs-commerce dichotomy. All the organic electronica steering these proceedings seemed more forced initially than what the years have kindly bestowed- providing incisively produced, and of course heartfelt written, melodies that stick.

Stop reading all reviews and just listen to "It's Summertime" and "Are you a hypnotist?". That should give you all you'll need in order to pick this cd up asap if you havent already. Truly one of the great experimental-rock bands with the emphasis on "mental". This adds to their maturing and amazing songwriting and musical skills that became so evident on Soft Bulletin.
Stevens drum work on Are you a Hypnotist ranks right up there with some of John Bonhams classics like "Good Times..." and "...Levee Breaks". We are all just so glad he's clean and sounding great. Although "At War w/ the Mystics" lost that pounding drumwork that is heard here.
What musicians and this cd does nothing but puts a big smile on your face the whole way thru. Even throwing away the overplayed and brilliantly layered "Do you Realize."
I could gush on for hours.. Just dont pass this one up.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

The Soft Bulletin may have been the most accomplished album by the Flaming Lips, but it certainly was not the last great album by the bizarre troubadours. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots is the most advanced the band's sound has ever been, and yet another wonderful set of songs that meld together into a grand, cohesive album. But also in its possession are some of the bands most immediate and touching singles, which The Soft Bulletin does not quite deliver in as great a breadth. "Fight Test," "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1," "Ego Tripping At The Gates of Hell," "It's Summertime," and of course the timeless classic "Do You Realize?" are all in the run for both catchiest and most sophisticated pop songs ever. The lyrical content is miraculously quite universal. The opening "Fight Test" introduces an immediately challenging moral dilemma which even philosophers might have a tough time wrestling with, while many of the album's other songs deal with both the robotic and human emotional sides of the said Battle. Only one of the world's most talented bands could ever make an album about such magical content so heartwarming and close to the human condition.

I just want to start by mentioning that I'm still incredibly impressed with the band for creating incredibly unique music after doing so for 20 years. It's always something strange with every new album and, for that matter, every live show. But honestly, I've never really been a huge Lips fan, and Yoshimi was no exception. The album begins with "Fight Test," which is possibly my favorite song by the band, and soon after there's "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 1," but that's really all I could stay awake for. The rest of the album is just strange sounds and Wayne Coyne's tired, melancholy voice singing about robots and magicians and other strange things. I respect them for being weird and doing their own thing, but this album just wasn't for me. It seems to be the band's most popular album, so I still recommend that you give it a listen. Just don't blame me if you hate it.
