"still going strong after a decade"

I have had AR570s for a decade. They are still going strong and sound great. These are heavy chunks of metal. you won't be carrying them around in your backpack. One star off for non-detented dials and a way to match output on each unit. Can't believe they are still being sold. That says something right there.
"Best speakers I've owned"

I bought my one and only pair of AR 570 speaker in 1991 for my amateur recording studio. They still sit on my desktop 18 years later, now connected to my Macbook Pro. In my opinion, these speakers have the best sound quality for the price. I hope they still make them to the same standard.
I understand the caveats from other reviewers. These are not plug and play, and they are called "powered" for a reason (no external amp needed). Which makes them very versatile because you can plug them into anything and hear great sound. These are strictly analog, no digital inputs, only RCA. But these are the only speakers where I can tell the difference between an mp3 and a lossless digital file.
"Good sound, but very annoying "sleep" mode, and not true stereo"

I'm an audio-visual technician and use several of these speakers for things like multimedia installations or piped-in music (which they are actually quite good for).
The reason I'm writing this review is because these speakers suffer from what I consider to be a major design flaw that, curiously, doesn't appear to bother any of the other reviewers, yet deserves mention. Specifically: these speakers go into a "sleep" or "standby" mode when no (or very low) audio is detected that causes them to "wake" with a very annoying "pop" when they receive a signal. It's not as severe as the woofer-distending "thump" these things make when powered on/off (another obvious flaw that others have noted), however it's very noticeable and actually cuts off a portion of the audio that wakes it. This may not bother you, but if you (like me) enjoy listening to music, you may find it unacceptable.
One other thing worth mentioning is that these are not a true stereo pair, but rather two individual speakers with separate controls each. If you require an accurate stereo image I recommend calibrating them with a split mono signal since the non-detented controls are inconsistent from unit to unit.
In closing I'd just like to say, when used in installed applications like I mentioned above, these sturdy speakers can provide years of trouble-free service. However I do not recommend them as computer stereo speakers, especially if you need to do any kind of critical listening.
I love these speakers. I've had mine since 1994 (perhaps earlier... I couldn't find the receipt), and they still sound perfect. I've always been impressed with the midrange on the AV570s- I hear things with these speakers that I don't hear on most other sub-$1000 speakers. The sound they produce is comparable to my Sony MDR-V6 studio monitor headphones- great highs and mids, but lacking in the bass, as compared to a subwoofer setup. That's fine for me though, as most of what I listen to is acoustic music, talk radio, and dialog recordings. The adjustment knobs are nice too. Also, these speakers get really loud, and I've yet to blow a driver.
I've used them as computer speakers, general purpose dorm room music speakers, speakers for an impromptu PA system, bookshelf speakers for my television, and monitors for a video editing rig. I was surprised to see that they're still available for purchase after all these years, but it makes since since they're a rock-solid product.
I only have a couple of minor issues with mine which knock a star off of their overall rating. First of all is that loud "pop" that occurs when the speakers are powered off- better to just leave them on. They also have a suspend mode that powers down the amps after a short time of not detecting audio... Sometimes while listening to music that has sections of really low volume audio (it's still audible to me), the speakers cut out into the suspend mode only to reawaken to a "pop" when the music starts to get louder.
After 15 years, with only a few mild annoyances and only minor cosmetic signs of wear, I can't help but recommend the Advent AV570s.
"Great Speakers"

I've had a pair of the acoustic research version since the early 90's. They're still going strong all these years later and don't sound the least bit worse for wear. As far as sound quality goes, you can't do much better for a pair of computer speakers. They aren't able to produce extremely low frequencies very well. Bass guitar isn't too bad, but bass drums pretty much get lost. If your other choice is one of those cheap subwoofers that come a lot of computer speakers, you're probably better off without them anyway. I absolutely recommend these.
