These are fantastic headphones for the price. They will please all but the absolute snobbiest audiophiles.
Things to remember
- They are open ear - you can hear others, they can hear you.
- The main plug is full size, with an adaptor for your Ipod or whatever.
- You should burn them in for 50-100 hours. Yes they sound good when you get them, but they will sound better.
- The cord is long...that is the design.
If you want to block background noise or don't want others to hear you, buy the HD280Pro's they are great and that is what they are for! (I love the 280's rugged coiled cord as well)

"Undoubtedly the GREATEST Headphone Decision" | 2009-11-10 |

Okay, so I have had these headphones for over a year now, and they are by far the greatest headphones I have ever owned. The sound quality is exceptional, and at the given price, it is a steal! They are extremely comfortable - they feel like pillows on your ears - and they are sturdy as well. I don't really know how to describe how good the sound is, its kind of something you'd have to hear to really appreciate. One thing to take into consideration is that these headphones do require some "break in" time, for the sound to really sound as good as it could. Also, they are open ear headphones, which I knew ahead of time, but it might annoy a roomate if u have the music a bit loud.
Overall, I give these 5/5 stars for excellence in sound quality, sturdiness, comfort, and price! I would definetely recommend these to friends, and I would stand behind these any day. |

"The best cans for entry level Hi-Fi for an unbelievable price" | 2009-11-09 |

Wow! Talk about an incredible bargain. The Sennheiser HD-555 cans are a great way to introduce yourself to the wonderful world of hi-fi for a very reasonable price (actually I got a steal on Amazon for $ 88 shipped). There are better cans out there, however you will be paying at least 5 times as much.
I purchased these cans about a month ago and wanted to give them time to break in to give their full sound potential. Out of the box they sound pretty good, but they do get even better over time so understand that when you first get them.
The cans are a little heavy, however they are extremely comfortable and after awhile you forget you are wearing them because they fit so well over the ears and on your head. I wear glasses and the company is 100% correct in that these cans do not squish your glasses against your head which is an added bonus if you wear glasses.
Now as far as sound, I have heard complaints that these are weak in bass, but that is not true if you have the correct equipment. They will never be heavy in bass if that is what you are looking for, however if you have the right equipment you will get very solid bass out of these. I'll explain in a moment.
I am not getting all of the sound potential from these cans because I am using these on my computer with a stock sound card. However the true test is by listening to these for a while and then going back to your old cans. I can't even stand my old cans now that I have been listening to the HD-555s for a while now.
So you can further understand the quality of my sound source I have been using these on my computer like I said with a standard sound card (low sound quality), however most of my music is hi-fi FLAC or hi-fi WAVE files uncompressed. Some of the music I have has been recorded from hi-fi records recorded in FLAC or WAVE using very hi quality phonographs with very high end cartridges, although some have been recorded from CD because no other source was released. As far as MP3s most of mine are 320 kps and I don't have any that are less than 128 kps. As far as the hi-fi FLAC or WAV files the lowest quality I have are at a minimum of 826 kps at 96 khz, or 1665 kps at 48khz. It really depends on your beliefs at which is worse because it really depends what the original source was. The highest quality of sound files I have come from records and they are upwards of 2974 kps at 96 khz if they came from a hi-fi re-mastered record such as Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs or equivalent.
I also use Winamp which I love because it isn't constantly spying on my computer like iTunes, Zune and the others. I also use DFX 9 which is a very good add on equalizer and makes a huge difference in sound quality.
So all that being said, these cans will not make a bad quality mp3 sound like hi-fi, and in some cases it may sound worse because it will expose the lack of quality in the recording. However if you are listening to a higher quality mp3, or CD's or hi-fi FLAC or WAV files you will hear things you did not hear before. I was listening to the Beatles, Abbey Road, Norwegian Wood from CD and I could hear much more subtle string work I could never hear before. When I listened to Stevie Ray Vaughan's Tin Pan Alley from a very hi-fi record release I could easily hear the hum of his amps, the pick hitting the strings, and all kinds of other things I could never hear before. Plus since the source was an album the sound was full, not chopped off at a ceiling and just sounded incredible. It was like I was in the room.
Not bad for $ 88! So to end this, you will hear more with these cans than you ever did before with lesser cans. They are extremely comfortable even if you wear glasses. They are very well made. They are priced incredibly reasonable. So what are you waiting for? Get them already.

"Great sound" | 2009-10-19 |

These headphones have wonderful sound. There are deep, yet not overpowering bass/low end frequencies. The Highs are outstanding and the mids give the sound body. These are open headphones, so listen to them in a quiet environment and generally away from people who might be annoyed with your music. Since they are open, the sound doesnt have a trapped feeling as common with many over the ear headphones. In response to complaints for these:
1. Let them warm up over time, the sound gets better with increased use
2. Many compare them to Bose headphones (note that some these are between $150 and $200 less than the bose headphones)
3. They sound great for music
I have tried a bunch of headphones, some do infact sound better than these, but for the price and type of headphone, these are absolutely amazing and well worth it!
Note: Some audio devices dont put out enough power for these at a nice volume level, such as some on board laptop sound cards, but ipods and creative sound cards provide more than enough. |
