"Fireproof, not burglar proof" | 2008-03-19 |

| For the price, this product works great and meets fire protection requirements. Like the other reviewers mention, don't expect the lock to keep a determined burglar out. The lock is probably more to keep out nosy invited guests. I just leave the key in the keyhole. |

I lost the keys to this during a move. I was actually kind of excited to try to be a safe-breaker to try to get my stuff. I was very disapointed that all it took as a light hit of a hammer to the lock and BAM it was opened.
Good price, nice to hold things, but don't expect it to protect. |

"Not to be used as a safe" | 2007-01-23 |

| I dropped the "safe" on the ground and it popped open. It is not a good idea to store private documents (or other private things) in this "safe." I suggest using only if you are worried about fire damage. |

Sentry Insulated Chest
Every household should have some method of protecting things like birth certificates, deeds, wills, stocks, bonds, and other valuables.
Pros:
- Inexpensive box helps keeps your valuables "safe" from fire, kids, and nosey adults. - Attractive; has nice handle; no sharp edges. - Excellent value for the money.
Cons:
- Flat key model (SEN1100) has a rather cheap-looking lock mechanism. - It weighs nearly 20 pounds, but that's because the walls are 1" thick and fire-resistant material isn't light.
Go to sentrysafe dot com to view all the Sentry offerings.
My advice is to buy the Sentry model 2100 rather than this model (SEN1100). The 2100 has a better (tubular key) lock, but only costs a few dollars more. (Staples dot com sells the 2100.) Sentry rates these boxes as follows:
1100 - UL classified - ½ hour fire protection 2100 - ETL verified for ½ hour fire protection of CDs and DVDs up to 1550° F
No small fire-box is particularly theft resistant. Even if bolted down, a lid could be forced opened with tools. In addition, although the 2100's fire rating is higher than the 1100, many non-portable safes offer better fire ratings. They are also larger and far more expensive. For better protection, you'd need to spend more money, but a Sentry chest is much better than doing nothing.
I use mine to store DVD backups of computer files. The Sentry chest is kept inside a large, fire-resistant safe. Hopefully, this double protection will do the job if there is ever a fire. DVD and other computer media will be destroyed at much lower temperatures than paper. |

"Not a secure product" | 2005-06-15 |

I purchased this as a safe to lock things in, very inexpensive to say the least.
Be aware, you get what you pay for. I think it's important to understand that this unit is designed to protect against FIRES... it is NOT a safe.
I found this out one day when I picked it up to open and put something in, accidently dropped it, and it just opened up easily... If you own one, hold the handle, then lift the unit up lengthwise, then tap it on the floor with a slight force angled a little on the smaller/top side of the unit, it will open easily everytime... this scares me... also, every unit uses the same key...
So if you need to protect against fires, this is probably a good device, for security, buy something better. |

| When I lived in an apartment, I once left a USB video camera on to see what happened when I was away at work. I fully expected to see my cat's antics trigger the motion censor. Surprisingly, I caught the maintenance man come in, change the air filters and leave, without leaving the required notice. Several other times, I recorded people entering my apartment looking around, then leaving. One turned out to be a government inspector; the other was a maintenance person preparing for the inspector. While nothing was stolen, it was unnerving to say the least. I purchased the Sentry fire safe to store and protect birth certificates, checks, and my passport. This is most inexpensive safe I could find. It is somewhat heavy, and locks with a small key (no combination to remember). |
