start with these 3 levels and then go to Carl Humphries's book (The Piano HANDBOOK)

This book is really useful and covers most basic hand positions, chords, and fingering techniques and features dozens of songs that seem difficult to play, but with the techniques you learn, will grow easy like the Entertainer and He's Got the Whole World in his Hands. Again, this book lets you familiarize yourself with the notes nad fingering techniques to help build up to more advanced material as well as smoothly transition both hands into the song. Again though, if you are an expert or intermediate player, this book will be really boring and simple and it's not for you, but if you are a somewhat beginner and struggling with both hands and chords, this is one of the best books. In no time, you will know the best fingering and key positions, as well as the ability to play a few piano classics that all the others know.

This is an excellent book for the adult beginner. It does need several more Level 1 books to be complete; level 1 Theory plus another one or two level 1 books.

I taught myself to play piano, patiently working through all three Alfred's books. I would only change two things:

1. There's no "All Time Favorites" volume for Level 3. I had always assumed there was and that my local music store was simply out of it, but after a recent concentrated search realized that they've never published one.

2. The CDs that come with these books are utterly disastrous. They need to be completely redone, with the songs being able to be downloaded from the internet or something. The CDs are not labeled well and do not contain all the songs. Even worse, they contain versions of the songs that don't match the notes you have on the page. This is owing to a fatal mistake: they tried to make the songs sound nice. To this end there'll be a violin or guitar accompaniment, etc., in an effort to "sell" you the song, I guess. The problem is you didn't buy the CD to hear nice music, but to learn how to play yourself! What many other instructional CDs do is have the melody on the right track, say, with the accompaniment on the left track, so that the student may turn down the accompaniment and listen only to the melody, or vice-versa. You can't do that on this CD, which is unfortunate. Both the melody and the accompaniment are on both tracks. There's some rather hairy accompaniments in the Alfred's books, particularly when you get to level 3: you'll doubtless want to isolate a few of them and listen to them carefully before trying them yourself, but there is no way to do this. But, as I say, the worst thing is that the notes you hear are frequently much more than what you have on the page.

As far as I know there is not yet a CD for the Level 3 method, not that I'd get it anyway.

This is a not so adult book after all, even though it's a good start for adults. I have achieved success with students starting this book as a contemporary piano book.(kids from 8-15) + adults too.The concepts seems hard if the book is attempted unassisted. Highly recommend it for any beginners who's going to take up lesson.

Songs are pretty normal, and standard beginner songs like Silent Night, etc etc.. Each of it is played with accompanying chord. Book starts off with C position on both hands, then G position, and then Middle C position.

Excellent book for beginners...
