this is a good book...
dear lovers of faerie lore,
... and while it does not quite capture the fair folk in the light that we know them, it works quite well as a novel. A young girl is exiled from the court of the queen to an estate that borders on the ancient realms of faerie, which in this story need blood sacrifice to keep going. That our tradition is much older than the corrupted sacrificial king cults, should not deter one from enjoying this book. In the end, as in the tale of Tam Lin, the heroine rescues the young man from the clutches of the Queen of the Wood through perseverance and cleverness. If you wish to know how this comes about, read this book.

I read this book as a teenager several times, and I will credit it with my love of reading as an adult. Now homeschooling my daughter I was purchasing some books for our home library, and looked up this book from my past. Amazing how as an adult and mother of three I enjoyed this book some much that I found myself still up at 2:00 in the morning to finish it.
This book has every element I enjoy in a great book: a strong heroine, a bit of mystery, history, and romance. Not the " get a room" romance but a sweet heartwarming romance. Compare to Love Comes Softly by Janet Oke on the romance factor. I am a person who has a handfull of movies I will watch more than once (aside from the classic Disney movies) and those tend to be classics as well: Gone with the Wind, Little Women, My Fair Lady, etc. I have even fewer books that I read more than once: repete some of the above movies as examples, but I could easily pick this book back up and reread it right now and I just finished it.
If your are debating buying or reading this book at any age take my advice and do it. You will not regret it, and you'll get hooked early.

When maid of honor Alicia Sutton's "little letter" complaining about the poor conditions at Princess Elizabeth's home infuriates Queen Mary, her sister Kate is blamed and sent off to Elvenwood Hall, otherwise known as the Perilous Gard, under the guardianship of Sir Geoffrey Heron. Kate insists to Alicia that she will be fine at Elvenwood Hall, but Kate begins to notice odd things in the area even before her official arrival. The villagers show fear and distrust toward anyone connected with the castle. When discussing the so-called Holy Well behind the castle, the old nurse Dorothy speaks of "those in the well." Most seriously, Sir Geoffrey's daughter Cecily has inexplicably disappeared, while his younger brother Christopher punishes himself for causing what he believes was her death.

When Kate discovers information that makes her believe little Cecily is alive, kidnapped by "those in the Well," Christopher secretly concocts a rescue plan that places his own life in jeopardy. Kate knows that if "those in the Well" are, as she believes, not the "Fairy Folk" they style themselves to be but rather pagans whose ancestors fled from the coming Christianity, then they intend to use Christopher as a human sacrifice. Kate's unwilling journey into the fairy hill leads her to Christopher. But how can an out-of-favor maid of honor stop the Fairy Folk?

Elizabeth Marie Pope's plausible explanation for some British fairy legends, though probably untrue, provides a fascinating framework around which to build her Tudor-era tale. Her skillful use of ballads adds atmosphere to her stories (three ballads appear in "The Perilous Gard," the most important of which is "Tam Lin," which helps Kate rescue Christopher.) Careful attention to historical detail and an imaginative and fastpaced plot combine with a strong sense of realism (for example, those in the fairy hill sometimes suffer panic attacks from being so far underground) to make this story among the most vivid I've ever read, despite the fact that it is considered juvenile fiction. Actually, I don't recommend that parents give this book to anyone under ten due to its intensity, as well as the maturity of some thematic material. (There is also one lonely curse word near the end.) "The Perilous Gard" is geared more toward teenagers, with a strong capacity to ensnare adults.

Pope's attention to historical detail also allows her to deal with Christianity from the perspective of a typical court member of court during Queen Mary Tudor's time. Christopher's name is discussed in the context of the saint after which he was named; Kate attempts to argue him away from his self-punishment by talking about God's mercy; and she tries to prove to the Fairy Queen that Christ's sacrifice on the cross makes the sacrifice of Christopher unnecessary. For this reason, Christian school teachers and homeschool parents may find this book interesting to discuss with their students.

Juvenile fiction or not, this book now numbers among my favorites. How Elizabeth Marie Pope could write a novel this amazing and then not write any more is beyond me.

I didn't find this book all that special. The style seemed stilted and awkward. Characters seemed emotionally flat and I didn't buy the romance in the story. Not a bad read, but half way through I was ready for the book to end.

5 Star Rating  "My intro to the Tam Lin legend"2007-12-25

One of the things I like about this book is that it manages to retain an archaic feeling without sounding fake (you know, the type of dialogue that sounds like a bunch of college students roleplaying). Pope's choice of using modern language for the dialogue doesn't spoil the setting at all, whereas trying to force readers to jump back and forth between Elizabethan dialogue and modern narration could be annoying, e.g. Patricia Wrede's version of "Snow White and Rose Red".

Overall, Pope's characters are really well fleshed out, and she's also a master at describing atmosphere. The supernatural terror that Kate is subjected to in the underground halls kept me up at night for a while after both times I read this.

I didn't know the plot of "The Perilous Gard" was related to an actual legend till I stumbled across the name "Tam Lin" elsewhere on the Internet. Now I'm fascinated...

This book is beautiful. The proud elves! The historical drama! Probably the best theory for where elves/fairies came from, oh, and the answer will suprise you!
This books haunts you in that though there are mystical, magical elements in this story when you done reading you have to admit that it really COULD have happened. This book made me cry, I love it when books have the power to make you feel that much emotion. Do yourself a favour and read the book!
