I don't know the reviews for this book yet. What I'm saying is this book is a required reading for my daughter. I saw the movie made from this book when I was young, and I told my daughter that the books that movies are made form are far more better and fill in blanks. So, she is preparing to read it and I'm sure that after she does, I will need to but her the other books in this series.
But, this is the autobiography of Maya Angelou, one should know that this is a must read. The movie was very good, and I am glad it is a required reading for my daughter, for when she is done, I will read it and I know that we will purchase the follow-up books as well, for I would like to know what drove Maya to be Maya, what hills and valley's she came through. This is historic and a must read for Young Women, because Maya overcame many things.

I was very pleased with this book purchase. So much that I have ordered another Maya Angelou book.

A life of self-reliance and achievement. Filled with insightful analogies and imagery reminiscent of Shakespeare. First of five short volumes in her biographical series. Each more adventurous and courageous than the last. Intelligent, captivating, first hand view of Black history from the Depression years and the lynching of Blacks to the anti-discrimination movements of the '60s. Earning her way, though many tribulations, from impoverished childhood in Arkansas to actions and respect on the world stage: America, Europe, Africa. An almost unbelievable cast of characters and experiences in between, courageously written. Including a view of American life beyond the Black experience not to be missed.

While not a large part of the story, we see how the development of religious and socialist leanings are natural to her experiences of hardship and discrimination. At the same time, she recognizes that while "we may all be black, we are not cousins." Each must assume self-responsibility.

Also interesting is the obviously superior grade school educational she received, even in segregated, rural Arkansas, over schools today,. Though much of the credit is due to her own active intellect and reading.

I have heard about this book for a long time but am just now getting around to reading it. I have been an Angelou fan for years and the autobiography gives an interesting perspective about this heroic woman.

This is a lyrically written, powerful autobiography of a young black woman and her life in 1940's south. She suffers sexual abuse, poverty and abandonment yet she endures and grows, grasping life with a verve and intellect that catapults her through the future. It is a truly inspirational story.

Unfortunately, it ends with her teen pregnancy and subsequent birth of her son. One wonders how she can be a mother while still a child herself.
