4 Star Rating  "Great coffee a small pain to clean"2005-03-07

I have used this coffee maker for well over a year. I have two. One at the house(clear) and one for the employees at a store we own(orange). So, they get used everyday and one of them several times a day. Out of all the coffee makers I have owned in the last fifteen years this one makes the best coffee. Neither coffee maker has had one problem. I think most of the problems in the reviews are probably failure to follow directions. Two things to remember 1) do not make less than the recommended amount of coffee 2)Rinse the pot out after you finish using the coffee maker. The only draw back to this coffee maker is the potential mess you make cleaning the grounds out. This coffee maker gets a 5 for coffee, but I gave it a 4 because of the difficulty in cleaning the top. If you are in a rush, have a hard time operating simple devices, or like a burnt taste in your coffee do not get this coffee maker. If you are willing to follow simple directions and put in a small amount of effort to get great coffee this maker is the one.

Synopsis: Good, hot coffee; hard to clean; although plastic, treat it fragile like glass.

I've had is vacuum pot for over two years now (see my earlier review back in June 24, 2002) and it has become my office's coffee pot for our daily brew. I still say that this makes the best coffee of all coffee pots I've used - granted, the others I've had cost less. I don't think I can find another pot that can keep hotter coffee without burning it. People looking for convenient, easy cleaning pots, look elsewhere. People wanting good coffee should consider this pot.

Although the coffee brews well, I was doubting if I could make coffee like Starbucks. One day, I used the Starbucks recipe of 2T Starbucks House (with the store grinding the whole beans) per 6 oz water and then I bought a cup of Starbucks house blend coffee to make a taste test in my office. Nobody could tell the difference in flavor except for the temperature. However, I normally brew a 1T to 6 oz. and it is still plenty strong for me.

Here's a cleaning hint for people with the coffee maker:
Use baking soda, cloth (or paper towel) and a chopstick! Otherwise, go to a 99 cent store to find those sponge strips on a long plastic handle. Baking soda can make the heating element look good as new and will keep the carafe clear.

I had to take off a star because it does require care to use and clean (not durable). Yet, I can't understand why people's handles keep breaking off. Just because it's not glass doesn't mean it can take punishment! True, my lid sometimes comes off if I apply pressure to the lid when cleaning, but I haven't broken it yet. I had to replace my unit after a year because it was forever stuck in "warming" mode and could not go into the "brewing" mode. Luckily, the Bodum group just said to return the base and they quickly shipped me a whole new set. I don't even need floppy disks to tilt it anymore!

People who have problems usually buy store bought, pre-ground drip coffee. Too course. I say buy whole beans and grind them yourself to a fine french press grind.

This machine makes decent coffee, but it is not worth the hassle or price. The first unit lasted only a month before the automatic shut-off stopped working and burned the pot. I got a replacement from Bodum and after two months it no longer turns on (the lights, clocks and timer works, but no heat comes on to brew the coffee). Both times before breaking the machine started to act strangely, turning off and on during the keep-warm phase. Also the temperature of the coffee would vary from use to use, from being merely warm to scalding hot.

These problems must be due to faulty design. Perhaps this is over engineered? The electronics are in the pot, which makes it very difficult to wash. The instructions warn not to submerse it or put under running water. And you can't wash it with a hand sponge - you'll need a cleaning brush that fits into the narrow top. And due to the odd design of the opening it is very hard to dump out all of the rinse water.

Other problems include the top section which is also difficult to clean. Pulling out the tight filter never fails to get cold and damp coffee grounds all over your hands, on the floor, counter, etc. The bottom unit which holds the pot and plugs into the wall is very light and cheap, with an impossible to read display, and doesn't look like it will hold up for long. Also, the filter has to be changed every month and they cost $5.00 (plus shipping, since I haven't found a store locally that sells them).

This has a two year warranty, but Bodum only offers exchanges and not a refund. I don't want to get another coffee maker that will only last for 2 months, so I hope that Bodum has other productst that are better built than this. Make sure you read enought of the reviews here if you are thinking about buying. Many others have complained of it malfunctioning or breaking (even those who gave it 3 or more stars). The Bodum Santos might be good for very light use (such as weekends only), but it doesn't seem to hold up if you use it every day.

overall, a disappointment. my 55 year old sunbeam coffeemaster makes better coffee with less work.

the clear plastic shell with visible wiring, etc looks great from an industrial design point of view and puts on a great brewing show, but i have now confirmed that the electric santos brewing process is faulty as to providing an excellent brew. and what is with needing to change a nylon filter monthly that costs $5? for the price of the brewer, a permanent filter should be standard equipment. pot is hard to keep clean.

my recommendation is to find a working sunbeam coffeemaster c30 model (available on eBay for about $30 shipped). if you need to view the brewing show, an older electric silex glass vacuum brewer may be for you. do a google on both those models and check them out...

I've had this coffemaker for quite some time and the coffee is great! I haven't had one problem with it. It took about five pots before I figured out how to clean the machine quickly but it's not a huge hassle at all. In fact, I feel that over time the design of this machine makes it easier to clean...each time I brew coffee I can get it thoroughly clean without the build up I had in the nooks and crannies of my old drip coffemakers. As far as the type of coffee used...we use canned 95% of the time and it works out great. Overall, our family loves the machine!

Positive Product Points

1. It's Attractive (at least I think so).
2. Fun to watch brew, like most vac pots.
3. Makes great coffee.
4. Great conversation starter at dinner parties (what the world is THAT?).
5. Made of plastic and not glass.

Negative Product Points

1. Timer not really useful, since the unit doesn't agitate the grounds in the upper part of the maker enough to incorporate them into the brew.
2. A pain to clean.
3. Expensive.
4. Made of plastic and not glass. (Yes, I know it's also a positive)

I can understand why people have such varied opinions about this coffee maker. The first thing that grabs your attention is the design. I happen to love it, but I could understand why others would not. If you want the basic typical industrial black or white plastic coffee maker on your counter, this is not the maker for you. I have the clear plastic unit, and while it's a pain to clean, this is the nature of the design of all vac pots. With the upper globe in place on the unit, the maker is rather large and imposing on the countertop. Every part of the eSantos is at weird angles and curves. It may not suit everyone's taste, but it's true beauty is it's functionality.

I have read in many reviews about the length of brew time being too short and complaints of weak coffee. This is not true with my unit, and I like a strong cup of coffee. I have felt no need to remove the silicone band from under the base of the unit. I did try it that way (with the band removed), and it didn't affect the brewing, so I re-installed it.

Here are some ideas for getting the most from this maker:

1) Use finely ground coffee. I've been using the setting two notches above espresso grind on my Solis Maestro grinder. It slows the pull-down time considerably, but I get a good full cup of coffee.

2) Stir the coffee during the brewing process. I would never use the timer, since coffee gets stale very quickly once it's ground. But even if it didn't, I wouldn't use the timer on this maker. The first time I used the Bodum I kept the plastic cover on the unit, the one meant to prevent the coffee from splashing over the sides. When the bubbles started to agitate the coffee during kickup, some of the grinds were floating on the top and never incorporated themselves into the mix. I roast my own coffee, and I've discovered that this problem is made worse by using very fresh coffee, finely ground. I ended up pulling the cover off and stirring the coffee before the burner shut off and started the pull-down. I start stirring once about half of the water is up top so the grinds are saturated, then stir occasionally. I find I need to stir the grounds when brewing with my Hario Nouveau (A Japanese made glass vac pot) as well, so I think it's just the nature of the beast.

3) Right before pull-down, the burner shuts off. If you've been stirring the coffee, it should almost immediately start pulling down into the carafe. As soon as this happens, stir the coffee several times in one direction, creating a whirlpool. This will cause the grinds to settle right in the center over the nylon filter, forcing the coffee to go through almost all the grinds. This will dramatically slow down the pull-down process, but you should get good strong coffee.

4) Use plenty of coffee. You may need to use up to 25 percent more than you're used to. This can be somewhat mitigated by using a finer grind and the techniques noted above, but don't be stingy.

If you follow those instructions, I think you'll be pleased with the result.

The filter is a nylon mesh molded into a plastic frame. It looks like a baby's pacifier and is easy to clean. After brewing be sure to pull it out over the garbage, as grinds will go out the bottom tube if you hold it upright and will go over the side (it kind of "pops" out) if you tilt it when removing the filter. The filter is reusable and there's no provision for any other kind, i.e. paper. The coffee made is very similar to french press, a little cloudy but with a different kind of body. I think the difference has to do with the much coarser grind I use when making french press. I personally prefer the cleaner flavor of the paper filters used by the Hario Nouveau, but the Hario doesn't come in a large enough size for several people, and the coffee from the Bodum is excellent.

The burner doesn't cook the hell out of the coffee. I normally take it off immediately and put the coffee in a glass thermal pot after brewing, but I've left it on the burner for an hour or so and it hasn't ruined the coffee, so that's a plus. The carafe also doesn't dribble all over the place when you pour like some other coffee makers I've used.

Now I'm going to complain about the Bodum being made of plastic. Actually, i've been able to avoid scratching the unit by only using a soft sponge to clean it, and it still looks pretty new. I've had to use a bottle brush to get all areas of the carafe clean, but if you're careful like me you won't scratch the carafe either. My water is pretty hard here in Minneapolis, so I have to run some coffee pot cleaner through the cycle every month or so or the clear plastic starts to get cloudy. The fact that it's made of plastic makes it less attractive, but it also allows me to use it more often since I'm less afraid of breaking it.
