""Manson Is Much Worth Reading"" | 2009-09-20 |

Many rock biographies have been written and there are some released each year. Why? Quite simply because the life of the people who write them or being written about are much more interesting than yours. How can I prove that? A good portion of those books are bestsellers and many more will be in the future. Marilyn Manson's biography "The Long Road Out Of Hell" is one the best of those. His book is honest indicative of how he became the person he is and what he went through. When some rock stars write how difficult their lives was it's sometimes "poor me, poor little rock star", not him, not Marilyn he couldn't care less if you felt bad for him and doesn't ask you to.
From his early days as a fan of bands like KISS, Judas Priest and Rush to the horror of seeing his grandfather masturbate as a kid to his intriguing meetings with Anton Lavey founder of the church of Satan, this book is captivating to matter horrifying it can be at times. It recalls how many of the kids mistreated him and played cruel pranks on him. He also talks about his first love and sexual experiences and latter in the book his relation with other girls. When he talks about his band mates or former ones he doesn't lie he's being honest and sometimes even apologizes. He says someone don't play right and how they aren't as great as they think and goes in depth about how those individuals were fired. He gives much insight into the relationship he had with them.
It's a rock star biography alright as there is plenty of sex, drugs and rock `n'roll in it, if not it wouldn't be right? The backstage encounters with fans lead to very intimate situations and some hilarious ones. You see just how far a fan goes. It covers what you want to know and some things you wish you didn't knew. When he talks about Satanism, it is different from the kind of Satanism you might think it would be. His perception of it is that you do not believe in Satan you believe in yourself and how you are your own God. It does not have anything to do with worshiping Satan (well not to this kind of Satanism at least) and making sacrifices. That was very informative and educative as well seeing many people who believe he worships the devil.
The book covers the debut of the Marilyn Manson and The Spooky Kids band as they released their first album, dropping the "...and the spooky kids" in the band name and most important of all the making of his "Antichrist Superstar" album the album that put him on the map. The book was released in 1998 so it tells basically the early years of the band, it the band's rise to fame .It's nice to see some of Manson's texts as he tries to get published in a magazine. I read them and while I'm not a fan of the genre of the stories he writes I thought there were good and he could well have done a career writing for those magazines. He writes some horror-comedy style stories. At the end of the book there is even a mini-journal of a tour with some events that happened, sometimes there are lots of descriptions and sometimes there are very little.
As some might expect there is a lot of talk about Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, about how he helped Manson achieve success and get a record deal and even helped him writing song. But also how Manson wanted to step out of his shadow and how at their debut the Manson band were only appreciated by a some NIN fans. Manson has been known to shock people and is quite controversial, yes, but people often make a false idea of something and he talks about how often some people made false rumors about him. In fact he denies some of those rumours in the book. He also defines what makes someone gay, a drug abuser or a cheater in his opinion. There is also an interview included in the book. In fact you get it all, interview, pictures (pretty good ones by the way), texts written by Manson and tour journal which makes it a little different from some of the other biographies out there.
It has been some time since Marilyn Manson first released The Long Road Out Of Hell, yet it's still as good, the value of it has not diminished since then. If there was a new edition in which Manson would continue writing where he left and would write about his career since I would definitely get it. I'm sure he would have some other entertaining stories to scare us or make us laugh. Neil Strauss helped co-write the book and I believe he did have some sort of impact on it. He also co-wrote "The Dirt" with Motley Crue (another best-seller may I add), another successful bio.TLROOH is one of the best biographies of the genre because it's well-written, interesting and it's different from a lot of the rock star bios. Even someone who's not a fan could still enjoy this book; it's that good. I would highly recommend reading it to any fan or to anyone who is curious; I've read it a couple times since I've got it and enjoy each time.

Reading his autobiography makes me want to him Brian Werner even more. I was considered a outcast in elementary and middle school and know how it feels to be bullied. I did agree that his Catholic school teacher bullied him and calling him the Anti christ because he was Espolocian ( just another denomination of the Christian faith) he still believed what the teachers taught him.
I will probably give him a hug if I ever meet him just not caring what he has become. |

| If you're unfamiliar with the genius of his music the book is still worth reading; if you're unfamiliar with the use of recreational products then you may miss some of the more salient points. It's nothing less than a indictment of our sick society & the misunderstand and unappreciated bi-products of that degenerative culture we call America. I found myself identifying with the man for a majority of the book; so there is another alien life form out there that still can't find his spaceship. The only criticism is that it just didn't last long enough; could have been much longer in my opinion....maybe he'll do a sequel! |
