Here is what people are saying about the Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now
5 Star Rating  "One Of The Best..."2010-02-05

books on Paul McCartney, (there isn't many) or on the topic of the Beatles as a whole. Filled with Paul's words and his voice, telling the 'story' of his life and of his time with the Beatles, this is a fair and well balanced account. Chock-full of tid-bits and first hand accounts, this book puts to rest many miss told stories, 'myths' surrounding song origins and takes you backstage and into the homes and lives of these four men like no other book can. As a Lennon fan, I was wooed by McCartny and his heartfelt tales of life with John, through the best of times and worst of times. Not at all censored and truly a book for all Beatles fans... for now, and many years from now.

A reader can tell that Miles spent a lot of time working on this book, which gives McCartney a lot of credit for the Beatles' popularity and creativity. McCartney certainly deserves a great deal of it (approximately 50% [Percentages appear throughout]). Miles actually gives McCartney more credit than I would have supposed that McCartney deserved for the songs on which John Lennon sang the lead vocal, especially the songs from the early period (1963-1965). The most obvious examples include the hit singles, "I Feel Fine," "Ticket To Ride," and "Help!" - to say nothing of "Norwegian Wood" and "In My Life". Miles and/or McCartney say that those songs were co-written by Lennon and McCartney, while most of the McCartney-led songs were penned by Paul alone or co-written with minimal input (10%) from John (See "And I Love Her" and "Eleanor Rigby"). The John Lennon interviews of 1972 and 1980 corroborate that Paul wrote the "Paul" songs - but that John wrote the "John" songs. At the end of Miles' book, Paul says that each songwriter contributed his 50% to the Lennon-McCartney catalogue. However, if one adds up the percentages that he assigned to each songs' creators from the preceding pages, Paul comes out on top, clearly. Do you think that John would agree?

A very worthwhile read. A wealth of information about how the miracles happened, and how the mistakes happened.

It's coming out now; both of the Beatles' engineers, Norman Smith and Geoff Emerick, admit that Paul was the "producer-on-the-floor" as well as arranger of most of the Beatles songs. Certainly he contributed what we consider most Beatlesque as a group, what distinguished them and what vaulted them over the top: those intriguing, keening harmonies; as well as the focus on drive and quality.

With many comments from Paul, many self-deprecating, you'll feel like you know him. Many laudatory comments about John, quite a bit more balanced and nuanced than what John ever wrote or said about Paul. You'll have a better understanding of John's contributions and virtues.

Read it, combine it with what you know, and judge for yourself. Excellent grist for thought. Don't miss it.

5 Star Rating  "the best"2009-07-01

Of countless Beatle books I have read, Many Years From Now is the best. I do not say so without qualifacation: I realize this is only Paul McCartney's end of the story, but by 2009, everybody who knows anything about the mighty Beatles has already come to his or her own conclusions about this massive story.

That said, I have been a Beatle fan, and student, 30 years, and this book taught me a lot about the fab four.

We tend to think of the Beatles as inward, because their myth is so huge, and their genius an island onto itself. But this book reveals different. In the mid-late 60s, it was not uncommon for Paul to go to a club, and hang out with Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, drinking and trading ideas until the swinging London sun rose. Early? Go to John Mayall's flat, and he'll teach you anything you want about the blues. Or, go see your less famous pals, smoke a joint and listen to Cage and Stockhausen. Wake up, go for a pint and have lunch and visit your friends at an art gallery, or, work on an underground newspapaer.

Indica, 8mm film, light shows: these guys, at least Paul, were at the heart of what was going on during the era, and knew and were active in every nook and cranny, including many I had no idea about. They NEVER worked in a vacuum.

The same goes for the music. All Beatle music has permeated our DNA. We have listened so much, it is as natrual as breath, and at times, we take it for granted or hear it as shopworn. But during its creation, these guys listened too: "Got To Get You Into My Life," that's Paul's take on Motown. "Penny Lane," the trumpet came from him seeing a Bach performance on the BBC. "And I love Her," that's Jobim. Like any lovers of music, these guys were influance sponges.

Reading, I was compelled to take out my Beatles albums, listening in the context Miles puts them. It proves as a music lover, no matter how esorteric your tastes get, no matter how long since you have played the Beatles, you go back and peal the layers again, like you have all your life. The music again reveals itself in a new way, and you are replenished, ready for new musical outer limits, probably somehow Beatles influanced

Obviously, this book made me see and hear my heros in new detail, in living color. Miles was a friend of Paul's, and was there for a lot of what he wrote. Most books about the Beatles document, but this book lets you into their world. You can feel what it was like.

The pictures: even these are super revealing. In one, Paul sits in a turtleneck in front of his stereo, a bottle of stake sauce on the table. Think of all the glamor idiocy associated with pop stars, and here is Sir Paul, hanging out with his stereo, having a burger, just like we might, absorbing the music. (What do you think it was: Milton Babbit? Elmore James? It's fun to speculate.)

I can only scratch the surface here of how much I learned from this book. Apple, Zapple, LSD, stu Sutcliffe, Alan Klien, anything you're not clear on is here in glorious detail. But this is no tell-all trash book, but a window into the world of our greatest artists. I don't take all I read in here as gospel--and in 2009, who cares whether or not Yoko broke up the Beatles. The important thing is the music, and the winodw Many Years From Now provides into that music.

And for that, I can't think of a better Beatle book.

I found this biography to be completely absorbing, filled with enviable and amazing anecdotes, not to mention the fact that you get Macca's own point of view. That in itself is COMPLETELY worth the book. As a Beatles fan born in 1969, I've read my share of very good and not so great biographies, articles, and general information on my "Beloved Boys". But this...it was, at times, like sitting with Macca over a cup of tea and reminiscing on the good old days...A most unique feeling and experience. A huge bonus, in my opinion, are the additional 60s-related anecdotes - you're IN THERE; you get to experience Swinging London at its height, and you get to meet many of the greatest artists, authors, musicians and what not of that era. To me - and remember I was born in '69 - it was a dream come true.
