| This book is a great inspiration for anyone looking for a story about overcoming hardships and succeeding in life. The Ben Carson story is one of how dedication, faith, and hard work can triumph in this world. This book leaves you with a good feeling inside and may give you that extra push to get something done or get through some bad times knowing that other people have gotten through stuff as well. |

This teaches professionalism and how to conduct yourself in a professional way. It talks about the importance of being self-taught, which I am starting to get myself into also. We get continuous reinforcement from Dr Carson's mother. Dr Carson talks about how to continuously improve at being a student and that attitude evolved into standards of excellence.. learning from the process, this is something important which alot of others won't share. I think we have stereotypes of what a smart person should be exactly even in terms of personality. There were alot of insights into medicine, some doctors who would give an 'automatic no', I wouldn't want to be anywhere near, medicine is about trust. I loved the photos that show GOD in Dr Carson's life, powerful images. I enjoyed the appreciation for people who helped Dr Carson along the way to get summer jobs, words remembered and treasured, "there's always a job for you here." I like how Dr Carson values everyone on his team.
I got 1100 on the SAT but I read things on other levels, the test is only as good as it is valid. Maybe a study guide would help out on some of the trickier SAT math problems which you really don't encounter anywhere else except on the SAT test, the expensive prep courses aren't really necessary for everyone. Do some of the 'smart people' talking about the test pretend they didn't pay $1000 for Kaplan or Princeton, give me a break. That's not my defition of a smart person, smart people talk about ideas. I don't think most doctors raised in the ghetto would give up on someone, like the ones described with the 'god complex'.
I enjoyed reading about how the procedures were described. I am going to write a thank you letter to Dr Carson because my life was changed by reading important lessons in Gifted Hands. I think I just had an idea I want to ask Dr Carson about in neuroscience. Thank you!

| This is a true story of a child who felt he was the dumbest student in his fifth grade class. Through the demands of his single working mother, who was illiterate, he learned the value of our public libraries, received glasses, and learned to read; thereby, he discovered that he enjoyed learning. Although college and medical school were difficult, Dr. Carson found his own way to success and became one of the most illustrious neurosurgeons of our time. This gentle man asks his clients to pray before surgery; he prays and listens to classical music. He said that God guides his hands during surgery. I encourage all of my students to read this book, both to see their own possiblities and to encourage others. |

As a young person who has expeienced a lot of crappy things in my life and who also grew up in poverty, I totally and absolutely applaude and admire this man. I read some of the negative reviews - my response to these individuals is simple : So what if the man acknowledges that he has done well in life and is blessed by God? He also acknowledges all the crap that he went through and did!
You must believe in yourself! Without this you may as well be non-existent! Now you tell me - who in their right mind would believe in a young impoverished black kid who pulls a knife on someone? Society expects kids like this to fail. And should they be able to scrape through life with little to no other criminal offences, society is pleasantly surprised. In other words the bar (if any is set at all) is very low for a kid like this. And yet the esteemed Dr. Ben Carson has gone on to live a life that is every bit worthy of all the praise that he has received.
Parents buy this for your children. Young people buy this for your friends. More mature folks buy this book and remember how to dream and dream big!
