An excellent book for learning how to film with a video camera. The principles of film photography will also improve your photographs with a camera. Fun diagrams that really spell out the concepts presented.

I've used this book in our digital video program for the past 10 years (at the College of Southern Nevada.) All beginning production classes (Video 1) use it as the primary required book. It's simple, yet comprehensive, touching on a variety of clearly presented topics. A non-threatening book, it's very user friendly, possessing lots of drawings and diagrams that are not techno-speak. Above all, it's a primer-introduction to 'film grammar.' It covers, composition, shots, the axis, lighting etc etc. - - little of everything. My students are tested on this at both midterm and at the final exam time. As we offer 10 sections of Video 1 a year, that means a couple thousand folks have used this book in our program. Beyond all that I have said, this book is inexpensive - and in today's educational marketplace that is a real gift. I've never met Tom Schroeppel nor written him, and I'm not even sure he is aware of how loyal we have been in using this book at CSN. Hopefully, this five-star rating and 'review' is a nice thank you to him. Thanks Tom.

I was assigned this book in film school. Though it is written for the motion picture student it begins by discussing the basics of a camera and an image.
As a result the first few chapters of this book end up being one of the best books about still photography that I have ever read. (and I have read a lot of them)

If you want to know how to take a better photograph, film or digital, the first part of this book perfect.

I have several copies of this book and I give them out to my still photo students.

As the title suggests, this is basic-basic instruction in cameras and how to shoot. Schroeppel is easy to understand and the entire book can be read in one sitting. Key sections include how cameras work, composition, shooting sequence, screen direction, and lighting. The book is ideal for beginners as well as those seeking a refresher of the fundamentals.

This book was the text used in my first production class in college while pursuing my Journalism degree. This book and that class made me realize early on that I wanted to be behind the camera instead of in front of it. That was 1992. I'm now a Production Manager and Senior Editor making training videos for the US Army. We have 23 field shooters, most of which came to us with little to no experience. I've been at my job for 10 years now, and to this day, this book is the first thing we give to our new videographers in training them. It is written in a simple and to the point manner. It's not flashy by any stretch of the imagination, but when you need to convey simple principles like the "rule of thirds", depth of field, focal length, and other basic principles-- this book is indispensable. If you can still find a copy and need a quick, easy to read and digest guide to the fundamentals of harnessing light with a lens, this book is still on the top of my list.

It's pretty incredible that a book could be so short and so effective. This was used as the 'textbook' for a graduate-level cinematography course I took at USC, and it was all we needed to complement our hands-on work. I wish every beginner photographer/filmmaker was *required* to read this, it would save them from so many common mistakes...
