"Decent sound but quite uncomfortable"

I will preface this review by informing everyone that I am not an audiophile. I appreciate great sound, but I am no expert on sound specifics. With that said, I was not overly impressed with these headphones. I felt that the sound itself was above average, and certainly better than the ear buds I was using at the time. My problem with these cans, however, is directly related to the comfort. The second I put them on they felt tight, even after a size adjustment. I gave them a test run for about an hour straight until I reached a point where my head was aching and my ears were seriously hurting. They also got quite hot after long use. I convinced myself that this would pass after I used them a little while longer. I lasted about 3 weeks before I couldn't take it any longer. I was not willing to sacrifice obvious discomfort for decent sound.
I returned the cans while I was still able to and exchanged them for a pair of Sennheiser HD428. They are roughly the same price (exactly the same at Best Buy). If you are debating on a pair of headphones in this price range, look no further. The sennheiser HD428 are fantastic. The sound is solid and the comfort... like pillows. I can wear them for extreme lengths of time and not have any problems. I HIGHLY recommend picking up a pair. You will not regret the decision. Both the Sony and the Sennheiser's have a single cord running from one earcup which is certainly a plus, and greatly reduces problems with tangling and neck restraint. I did prefer the Sony cord to my current Sennheiser's, but that's really just nitpicking. Both are long enough to allow motion, the Sony's cord was just slightly thicker.
All in all, the Sony V500's were painfully average and in my honest opinion are not worth $80, nor are they worth the comfort they so obviously lack.
I love it! Nice sound and noise reduction capability... and my friend says the girls them love it too.
It got caught in a taxi door and it still keeps on kicking too so that is a plus.
"Just average IMHO"

As a freelance broadcast engineer, I was looking for something that was reasonably compact and durable for the road kit, in addition to being useful for evaluating sound even in high noise environments. These cans did an ok job on the compactness and durability, but I was a little disappointed in the sound.
The construction is solid, and the folding design is nice. The cord is strong enough to take a bit of a beating but is not replaceable. The ear cushions and general construction seal out ambient noise well. For those who complain that this headset is too tight, just tweak the headband spring a little bit to make it looser.
As for the sound, I found the frequency response to be lacking definition in the low end. Mids and highs are clear and clean. This would not be the tool of choice for critical sound evaluation, but that would not be expected of a headphone that costs $55.
Overall, this headphone will fill my need for a bang-around set of cans, and is about what you would expect for the price. With these I can hear gross problems with the audio and know that its there, but thats about all.

Forget breaking them, these things are excruciatingly painful to wear. I wore them for half an hour and my ears were killing me, a DJ is supposed to wear these for hours? I'm going back to my Sony MDR-V600 headphones, they maybe twice the size, but at least they don't crush my ears. So, unless you're into S&M, don't get these.

In my opinion these head phones are great overall. They are comfortable and sound great. For the people who said these headphones were for travel there wrong. Sony nor amazon advertive that these head phones were made for travel ,they are NOT designed for noise insulation. It even says on the box DJ head phones and as DJ or around the house head phones there great, they even fold up so you can take them with you like in a back pack not a plane. As far as sound goes The Highs are crisp and clear mids are strong and clear the lows are powerful and give that thump that you would expect from a 14"subwoofer. The first time I heard these at a best buy store I know these were the ones to get. I compared them to my friends bose on ear headphones no comparison the sonys sound much better especially the lower tones and I saved my self about $100. I would buy sony over bose any day.

I bought my V500 2 years ago... they did the job, I took great care of them. I have earings and the earpieces iritated them cause of the pressure. one day while on air I picked them up and put them on. the right ear felt wierd... i took them off and the plastic just snapped off. there's no structure support for something under pressure against your head... it got weak and just snapped. what a waist of $$ now i have to go buy new ones.
