As a full-time instructor at the Art Institute of Phoenix, where I teach life drawing, character design, backgrounds design and similar classes, I often look for texts and information related to the subjects I teach. I picked up Forensic Art and Illustration recently, and have found it to be one of the best text purchases that I've ever made. Karen Taylor has accomplished in a single book what numerous authors have failed to do piecemeal over the past hundred years, and that is to assemble, in a single volume, in a highly readable and information-packed form, the best single description of the nature of forensic art available. Every kudo you read in these reviews is deserved. The book is well layed out, written in understandable English, with important information in bold type, a great device for reviewing salient points when going back to a chapter or two. The visuals are great, and deftly illustrate each point she is making. Her own reputation is of the highest order, and her talent and integrity stand out on every page. Having had the honor of meeting her and taking her forensic classes, I can attest that the book is a superb resource, both for the classes, and as a stand alone volume. You can't miss with this one. I highly recommend it, not just for those who think they will become forensic artists, but for all artists and laymen interested in the human form, anatomy and forensic information in general. The price, while moderately steep by general book standards, is average compared to most college textbook prices, and lower than many. Don't be put off by it. You will get every penny's worth.

Seldom is a book published that provides such a wealth of accurate, useful information; Forensic Art and Illustration by Karen T. Taylor is such a book. Like many of us, I first purchased this book as the text for a Forensic Art workshop, and I have not put it down since. So many pages are covered with clay and graphite that it's time for me to get a second one! This book is a constant reference for anyone in the field of Forensic Art, and a generous source of information for all interested readers. A combined history and "how-to" book, Forensic Art and Illustration covers everything from anatomy and drawing to the role of the forensic artist in Law Enforcement, complete with courtroom and media ethics. This book is written in an organized, accessible style that underscores Ms. Taylor's many years of experience and professional integrity. Forensic Art and Illustration is truly the one definitive source of information for anyone who wants to know ANYTHING about this subject.

Even if you have no sculpting talent whatsoever, this book is an engrossing read and a valuable reference for any crime or mystery writer. Karen Taylor has consulted for such hit TV shows as CSI and BONES and she definitely knows what she's talking about. The text is lucid and engaging and not at all intimidating, while the photos and diagrams alone are worth the price of admission!

I purchased a copy of this book when it was first published. I actually now have a second copy that is filled with notes. It is an excellent and comprehensive text on forensic art. I have been a forensic artist for over ten years. I encourage anyone in the field who has not read Karen Taylor's book to get a copy and read it thorougly. I have found that I reference it several times a year on variousl aspects of forensic art. In short this book is a must have for anyone in the forensic art field.
