| I saw Dark Cloud 2 at Gamestop and since I liked the cover I bought it. Wow, this rpg is amazing! The world building you can do is amazing and so are the weapons. The controls are easy also. I didn't find this game to difficult and there is so much you can do. And the graphics are good also. Another great rpg to add in my ps2 collection=) |

BETTER THAN DARK CLOUD IN EVERY WAY
voice acting, more story line given.. (you never feel aimlessly going through a dungeon for no reason) cut scenes help keep it fluid and fresh
grafx are incredible, VERY good..i like them even after having ditched my xbox360. Framerate is SOLID silky smooth never gets choppy
STRONG RPG elements.
combat system is basic..but then..its gonna still make you think and stayon your toes.. (the original i felt had control issues and was actually to hard to play)
All in all this game is worth every penny, TOP NOTCH! |

"Beautiful Looking Disappointment" | 2008-11-01 |

Dark Cloud 2, just like its predecessor, is a dungeon crawler RPG like Diablo, or Phantasy Star Online. However despite being the same type of game and even making numerous improvements to the original, Dark Cloud 2 is still a huge disappointment.
First the good: Dark Cloud 2 is visually better in every aspect than Dark Cloud 1, there's no debating that and the same can be said of the audio which includes a new feature of voice acting. The raw and uneven difficulty of Dark Cloud 1 is also pulled back too so there's no permanent weapon loss this time around. Additionally the story, at least in the beginning, is a bit more compelling.
However with all these improvements and even while keeping the core game intact the game has found a way to really drag itself down. The most immediate and glaring issue with Dark Cloud 2 is how the town building section, a big part of Dark Cloud 1, has been botched up. In the town building mode you must use geomod parts in order to build things like houses, trees, rivers and such. The catch is that the dungeon will never have enough parts to build the bare minimum required to progress through the area unless you play through the same dungeon multiple times, grinding. To get around this though you have the option of simply buying the geomod parts with the in-game currency which in order to have enough of you need to grind for. Not that there wasn't grinding Dark Cloud 1 but the solution to Dark Cloud 1's grinding was to simply to convert unused weapons into items to assist leveling up unused character's weapons.
Dark Cloud 2 also loads itself up with a lot of minigames and while you only have to play each one only once to progress through the game the rewards for playing the minigames are pretty important to your success in the game. For example playing Spheda after clearing a floor of enemies will often earn you one revive powder, an important consumable item that can not be purchased regularly anywhere else in the game. Another example is that the photo-invention minigame is the only way to make the Ridepod effective after the halfway point of the game.
Dark Cloud 2 also has a large tendency to really drag itself out. Even though Dark Cloud 2 has less dungeons and explorable areas than Dark Cloud 1, it will often require you to revisit previously explored areas or stop the progress of the game in order for you to complete a required minigame or with aforementioned grinding. Dark Cloud 1 will clock in around 20-25 hours where as Dark Cloud 2 will clock in at 35-40 hours, most of which is you the player grinding.
There are other smaller problems like lack of a thirst system or found weapons being useless but to sum it up is that Dark Cloud 1 was a flawed, simple but charming and fun Dungeon Crawler. Dark Cloud 2 is well polished and gorgeous but ends up weighing itself down with forced minigames and needlessly complicates itself to where this 40 hour game is no epic but tired boredom, an exercise in classic grinding. |

| Oh ick!! Did everyone who wrote a good review for this game forget to mention that you have to survive the game on only 32 HP?? the only way to increase that is to find an item that is less then easy. Theres almost too much to this game, I can see why people spend over 100 hours on this game, Im only 3 1/2 hours in and im already exsausted by the nonsense. Pee-U. |

A lot of people are going to disagree, and that's fine. This is simply my opinion, based on 40+ hours of game play.
This game is horrible. The first few hours are awesome, and you'll think it's fun. That charm soon vanishes, and all you're left with is a boring, older, duller version of Kingdom Hearts - as far as gameplay goes anyways.
Throw in some cheap watered down version of Sim City, and there you go. Oh, and the building of towns...yeah, mind numbingly boring.
Everybody says this is like Zelda for PS2? I say they must be smokin something awesome, because this is nowhere near Zelda.
Don't buy into the hype, it's false, and you'll waste money. |

I started this game today and I loved the first game when it was new, but this one just isn't up to par. There's no way to dodge anything. Try jumping to the side of a rolling turtle and it follows you. Same goes for fireballs, both of which are just stupidly unbelievable. I've died at least 7 times on just the third level of the first dungeon, because of fireballs. You also can't block fireballs and even if you do block other things they cause half damage.
Also, when I first turned on the game, I was thrown into a battle against 5 or 6 robots and just told the button commands. That's incredibly hard to do right out the gate. I died the first time just trying to get used to the controls. |
