This book is exactly what I had hoped it would be...a man capturing his memories and adventures from his walk across america (partial walk). I loved hearing about the different characters he came across and the generosity of the people. For those of you that have done some traveling through our great country, I am sure you have experienced some of the same. Peter Jenkins is not a professional writer and never professed to be...he is just sharing his experiences and I am grateful that he did.

The condition of the book is awesome. I got a nice discount from what my University wanted to charge for this book.
"Pros and cons"

Synopsis: The author's walk through the eastern half of the United States during the turbulent seventies leads to faith in himself and patriotism in his country. Pros: It's not about the bike! Jenkins' book was an inspiration to my own journey. The author successfully conveys his emotions and quest for meaning in life to make this book a perennial classic adventure-travel memoir. Cons: The writing is stilted, if not dated, and the book ends during a sabbatical on his walk, leaving the reader feeling incomplete. It is interesting to note that the sequel has been out of print for many years.

This is one of the best walk books ever written, my favorite next to the 900 mile walk of Jerry Ellis, author of WALKING THE TRAIL, ONE MAN'S JOURNEY ALONG THE CHEROKEE TRAIL OF TEARS.
I am 39 years old. I first discovered this book when I was 15; it was required reading for 10th grade. I loved it and even cried in one part. Since then I think I have read it 3 more times. I read the second part (Walk West), Walk Across China, and Close Friends. My parents both read his books and enjoyed them as well. I grew attached to his wife in the book, so when I heard they got a divorce I was too upset to read anything of his for awhile, but I do plan to read the rest of the books he wrote on traveling, as I assume I should "get over it". I have never gotten the opportunity to travel much in life, but whenever I read one of Peter's books I feel like I am on a journey. I used to think if I were to go anywhere I would want to go to Europe or someplace glamorous, but he made ordinary places, like the south and small towns seem like the most exciting places I could ever go to...not because of what I could see or what I would do...but becuase of the people and the stories they could tell. He made me want to listen.

I enjoyed the pictures as much as the story. Some of the story I was just incredibly impressed with but he admits that he didn't take notes on his journey and depended greatly on his memory. I was left wondering how much he got correct in the recalling. It is a true story and it shows some of the better parts of American life. It was heartwarming and wonderful in a lot of ways, but being true it does have heart ache and disappointment but the author doesn't focus on these. It's a good read.
