Editorial Review
Garmin's Foretrex 101 wrist-mounted WAAS-enabled GPS unit is the perfect navigational tool for a wide variety of outdoors enthusaists, from mountain bikers and hikers to kayakers. It's got all the features of the Foretrex 201, but it runs on 2 AAA batteries instead of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Its six dedicated buttons (GoTo, Page, Enter/Mark, Up, Down and Power) make it easy to operate. It offers the most essential navigation data--enhanced GPS accuracy, extensive storage for waypoints, and reversible routes and tracks -- on an easy-to-read display. With the help of Garmin's exclusive TracBack technology, hikers can mark a campsite, go trekking all day, and follow the electronic "breadcrumb trail" back to camp in time for dinner. Because it's waterproof, the Foretrex 101 is a natural companion on watersport adventures like kayaking, canoeing, boating and sailing. It includes a sailboat racing timer, which enables you to configure the countdown sequence prior to the start of the race and utilize the GPS location to be in the best possible tacking position when the race begins.

The WAAS difference
  • 100 meters: Accuracy of the original GPS system, which was subject to accuracy degradation under the government-imposed Selective Availability (SA) program.
  • 15 meters: Typical GPS position accuracy without SA.
  • 3-5 meters: Typical differential GPS (DGPS) position accuracy.
  • Less than 3 meters: Typical WAAS position accuracy.
WAAS is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time. And you don't have to purchase additional receiving equipment or pay service fees to utilize WAAS.

How it Works
WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.

Who benefits from WAAS
Currently, WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America. There are no ground reference stations in South America, so even though GPS users there can receive WAAS, the signal has not been corrected and thus would not improve the accuracy of their unit. For some users in the U.S., the position of the satellites over the equator makes it difficult to receive the signals when trees or mountains obstruct the view of the horizon. WAAS signal reception is ideal for open land and marine applications. WAAS provides extended coverage both inland and offshore compared to the land-based DGPS (differential GPS) system. Another benefit of WAAS is that it does not require additional receiving equipment, while DGPS does. What's in the Box

Here is what people are saying about the Garmin Foretrex 101 Wrist-Mounted GPS with Waterproof Exterior
5 Star Rating  "My Garmin Story: Trying to drown a Foretrex 101"2009-08-17
- Reviewed By User: A20SJMN2U8G9F9
Since the Foretrex 101 has been around for a while, and there are plenty of other reviews you can read, I thought I'd just tell a little story about mine. I've had it for about 3 years.

The Foretrex (like all Garmin handhelds) is IPX7 waterproof, meaning it should withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Well let's just say I did some "testing" on mine. While houseboating, I lost it when we were docked on the shore one morning. I spent the rest of the day trying to figure out where it was. I looked everywhere. The next morning, about 10 minutes before we were going to head to a different location, I saw my Garmin sitting right next to the boat... under about a meter of water, give or take a few inches. My guess is that it had been there for about 24 hours. I waded in to retrieve it, knowing NOT to try to turn it on, and took the batteries out immediately. Needless to say, it was not waterproof enough to withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for 24 hours. I could see water behind the screen. I could hear water sloshing around when I shook it. This did not look good.

After we got home from our vacation, I figured it was a lost cause, and was too busy to deal with it anyway. I basically left it sitting a container of uncooked rice for 2 weeks to try to dry it out (sidenote: It turns out the unit does a very good job of holding water IN, at least under atmoshperic pressure). Well a few days ago I decided to take the unit apart as a last resort. I slowly squeezed it in a bar clamp long ways, as suggested on the internet, to get the 2 halves apart. I disassembled the guts as much as possible (not as easy as it sounds - very small/sensitive parts). I dried everything with a paper towel and put the parts in rice for about a day to make sure. I cleaned all of the electrical contacts on the main board, some of which had corroded, with 91% rubbing alcohol. I then reassembled everything, re-sealed the unit with pure silicone caulk, and used super glue to hold the case together.

Yesterday, after waiting a day for the caulk and glue to cure, I put in fresh batteries and fired it up. WORKED LIKE NEW! I could not be happier. It even kept all of my saved waypoints and tracks. Incredible.

Aside from being ridiculously rugged (idiot-proof), I love this thing for geocaching and keeping me from getting lost in the wilderness. It's a great bare-bones GPS unit. Seriously, it's the best you can get for $100.

2 Star Rating  "Seems a bit dated"2009-06-26

Was hoping for something a lot better than this. Display looks like 1980's technology, and it is pretty confusing to use. It takes a while for the satellites to connect & when they do, it is still a bit uncertain what to do next. I imagine there will be much better technology with much better displays coming out soon.

Pros:
Clear, informative and responsive GPS
Small and lightweight unit
Clear display
Easy to use pages and menus
Uses any AAA battery, alkaline or rechargeable

Cons:
This gps is unreliable tracking distance when using it running, biking, or hiking. I used this for unit for long runs, bike rides, and hiking. I have to bring my Magellan Triton along if I want an accurate distance.

Reception is really bad in Europe & Afghanistan. As soon as I enter moderately dense forest I will lose reception. Everywhere I go with this unit reception is an issue.

This unit will take 10-20 minutes sometimes just to receive the initial signal.

I bought this for sailing on our Hobie. Will use primarily to track speed and direction. Other features are a bonus. Like the fact that it uses AAA batteries, as spares are easier than recharging.

I've been using GPS's for decades, for work and pleasure. The sensitivity of this product is phenomenal. This GPS does exactly what it is supposed to for a reasonable price. Why only 4 stars? In today's age of technology there is no reason a low power OLED with a map capable SD map slot is not installed. I would pay a little extra for that. Go with the AAA battery version if you plan on using it a lot; especially in the field or on mission.

5 Star Rating  "Easy to Learn and Work"2008-08-12

We use this wrist model for Mounted Posse, Search and Rescue and for mapping trails in the forest. The display is bright and clear - easy to read in sun and shade. For the equestrian it stays with you on your wrist, takes one hand to operate instead of the traditional hand held units. Lots of good features packed into a compact size. A good buy at the cost.
