| This game is fun, well balanced and with lots of replay value. Personally I love mythology and the idea of taking these different mythologies from all over the world is great. I wish there were more expansion packs, you can do so much with this, and there are so many other mythologies around the world that you can add to this. |

This item was made by micoshaft, and Ensemble studios (EOS). EOS was the online multiplayer engine that ran all the fun. Well they went out of business, so Ubisoft is now the ones that are selling the game.
When Ubisoft released the game, they shipped every single copy with the same CD KEy, thus making the online multiplayer useless.
I called Ubisoft, and they are out of product keys to re-issue, and Microshaft AKA little India, is not covering this game anymore because it is out of their 5 year window of support.
Ontop of all this I received the $9.99 jewel case edition that you are debating on buying this one or that one... they are one in the same.
IF, and only IF you get the actual product that is pictured above of the Original box will you receive the correct product to get online with, because it will be a unique CD Key... (not included in this product...grrrr)

I very seldom have the time to play PC-games anymore, but this is one of the few games I've played from beginning to end, expansion-packs included. In it, we get to follow a relatively good storyline about an evil Cyclops bent on destroying the Aryan colony Atlantis by any means necessary. The "game system" is pretty much the same as the previous, non-mythological "Age of Empires" by the same producer. Naturally, judging by the name of the game, here is the added bonus of mythology and religion. The hero; Arkantos, a general from Atlantis, travels through the land (thereby playing them) of the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Norsemen. The units and build-up of the three civilizations are pretty much made in accordance with the racial soul, history and legends of the three related peoples as they were in reality.
We see trolls, hydras, Gods and men battle for victory at each map, while the plot of the story unfolds. The inclusion of religion as such a major part of the game of course fell into welcome arms for such a religious person as me. All in all, there is not so much to say about this excellent game apart from that if you enjoyed the other games in the series, and have somehow evaded this one, get it now. Make sure you get a version with all the expansion-packs as well, so you don't miss out on this wonderful game taking place in the European past. The game is really beautiful as well, the graphics and music fitting perfectly into making this quite the experience. 5 stars, despite a slight tendency to repetition in some of the levels. |

This game is fun! If you liked Age of Empires 1/2, Warcraft 2, or similar real-time strategy games, this game is for you. It runs pretty well on a modest (by today's standards) computer and has robust network play... we've played probably 200 network games at home and only had trouble a few times. There are many reviews of this game out there so I won't go into details about the particular, features, strengths, weaknesses, etc.
The game I received from Nothing But Software being sold here was actually the THQ branded DVD-case version of the game that evidently originates from the UK. It installs and plays fine, and after you install it, you don't need to keep the DVD in the drive (a plus for me - I hate having to hunt down a disc to play a game that is completely installed on my computer).
I purchased this copy of AOM:Titans so that my friends' kids, who moved out of state, could still play together with my daughter over the Internet. So, I was pretty disappointed when I read here that people were having trouble getting the multiplayer mode working.
If you like to play the game in multiplayer mode, there are definitely issues. First, you can't play this version of the game with others in the "Ensemble Studios Online" mode as far as I can tell. I get an error when I try to connect, and it isn't related to the license code like others have seen. And, as others have mentioned, you don't get a unique license code with this version of the game, so the game won't let you play via ESO anyway unless you can somehow get a valid license code (most of the companies don't have them now, it appears). Yet another reason why license codes are generally bad for the paying consumer - eventually, the company that made the game washes their hands of it, sells it off to some other company, and no longer provides support).
However, you CAN play this game multiplayer via the LAN or Direct IP mode. If everyone has the new version, there should be no problem playing multiplayer. However, if someone has the original version of the game...
The key issue I haven't seen mentioned is that this version of the game refuses to connect to the original version of the game (from Microsoft). If you try to connect to someone who has the original version of the game, it will fail with a "You have the wrong version of the game" type of error, despite the fact that all computers have the latest "Version 1.03" update of the game. However, I found a work-around for this that allowed me to connect a computer running the new THQ version of the game with the original version on another computer. Basically, all computers need to use the AOMX.EXE file that comes with this new version of the game. I just copied the file over to computer with the original version, renamed it to AOMXNEW.EXE (to avoid overwriting the original version's AOMX.EXE), moved the file into the install folder - and then I can run it whenever I need to connect with someone who's running the new version of the game. I'm not sure if this trick works for every "new version" of the game (i.e the ones marketed by Ubisoft, Valusoft, etc.) but I'm guessing it might.
So, while most of this is not technically a "review" of the game, hopefully it will help you if you're trying to get multiplayer working. It's a great game and I find it most fun playing together cooperative or head-to-head with my family on our home network. |
