"The Best RPG I've Played Yet..." | 2009-06-21 |

Neverwinter nights is probably the best role-playing game I've played yet. It has a wonderful and decent length story line for single player, plenty of well-made expansions, a great multiplayer experience with endless numbers of worlds to explore, takes place in the wonderful world of Dungeons & Dragons, and perhaps most importantly has graphics that were well ahead of its time. I was surprised to hear that the game had compatibility with large display monitors, even being able to display resolutions like 1920 x 1200.
I ran into a few glitches with the game, and the Dungeon Masters on many game servers can be quite controlling and in some cases downright abusive of their authority, but on the whole I would say all the positive aspects easily outweigh these significant negatives. Really though, most role-playing games have the same problems, unless you're playing a MMORPG. The only other significant drawback that I can think of to this game is that it appears to contain an older version of SecuROM. I didn't have too much trouble with it though, and there are no activation or install limits that I know of as is the case with the retail version of Red Alert 3.
To finish on a positive note after the negative aspects of the game, I would also like to point out that this game seems to have an amazing community. On the whole, it is my impression that this game as a community, particularly if you're playing on role-playing or story-based servers; that is quite possibly the most polite and well mannered community of any game I've played so far.
To sum up this game, I might just say that it's like playing Dungeons & Dragons on the computer. because it's on the computer, there is no need to bother with all the rules, technicalities, and dice rolls that can make traditional Dungeons & Dragons a particularly boring experience if not handled properly. This game fixes that by having the computer handle all those boring aspects for you so that you and your friends are free devote all your time to enjoying the wonders of the Dungeons & Dragons world.
If you like fantasy games, role-playing games, the Forgotten Realms universe, or Dungeons & Dragons, this is the game for you. As of when I'm writing this, you might say that the graphics are out of date. If you can get past this aspect though, you should enjoy this game. I played it for years before eventually putting it down, and I highly recommend it. |

Neverwinter Nights is a well thought-out game that is full of plot twists, side quests, and customizable characters. This is a great game that gives you many hours of enjoyment. It may get tedious to some players out there, however.
So if you are looking for a great game that runs on even older computers, this is the game for you. |

"Good but not great: too combat oriented, Baldur's Gate is better" | 2008-08-15 |

I have played through the Diamond version of this game, including Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark.
I can't say much for the multiplayer aspect of it, since my friends aren't really d&d people, but I can speak for the single player aspect.
This is one of those games like starcraft, WoW, etc. that is fun mostly for the endlessly competitive tactical combat aspect. In NWN, combat is all about math, especially for fighters. This is fine, except, there's not much besides combat in this game, so it gets tedious, since unlike in the above games, you don't participate in combat, you just click on something and then wait. (in NWN you only control one character)
There's not a lot of story, not a lot of non-combat challenges (Although there is one lawyer-quest that is pretty fun). Plus the background environments are highly repetitive, there's very few textures and all the buildings look the same inside. In other words, don't expect this game to have much 'meat' to its plot or atmosphere compared to the high-quality single player RPGs like Final Fantasy 7.
You might say to me: "Hey, but what about all the modules you can download?" Yes, there are a lot of modules to download, but there is basically only one that reaches the quality level I am referring to (Darkness over Daggerford), and all the other ones have either bad writing, dubious content (awkward polygonal sex scenes come to mind), or are just plain short.
All in all I would say if you like games like Diablo II, then buy NWN.
On the other hand, if you like games like Final Fantasy 7, with more of an epic story, side-quests, mini-games, and variety in general, you are much better off getting the Baldur's Gate box set below.

If you are a D&D fan you owe it to yourself to pick this game up.
The first module (the main) is a little boring. It's the last 2 modules that makes this game shine.
For the price it's well worth the $$. Many hours of gaming from this title. |
