| I agree with most of the other reviewers. This is a great movie in all respects. But I must point out its similarity to the classic 'Count of Monte Cristo'. An innocent man wrongly convicted and incarcerated in a hellish prison who finds wealth and then has revenge on his accusers. The director presents a subtle hint at this in the scene where the inmates are stocking the library. One of the books being shelved was 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. Nothing more to add except it deserves it's place as one of the all time greats. |

Story telling just does not get any better. Steven King's short story was terrific and yet Frank Duramont (director), Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, James Whitmore, Bob Gunton, Clancy Brown, Mark Ralston put capture on film the telling of a tale you will want to hear again and again.
It just do not get any better than this. |

| The movie is excellent as with any version you purchase but blu-ray really adds a new level. The only problem with the dvd is that the highlights are hard to see in some of the menus so navigation of special features can be difficult but once you realize what to look for its not so bad. |

The Shawshank Redemption is one of those movies that only comes around once every decade or so. There is really no way that you could knock a movie like this. Beautiful acting, direction, cinematography, and even gives a nod to Les Miserable near the end, and that deffinitly makes it a big winner in my book. Did I mention the symbolism? Steven King did such a masterful job on not only directing, but touching on deep themes on race, purigatory, and what it truly means to be free (and this is just a scratch on the surface compared to everything Shawshank tries to say).
Movies at this calibar are extremely hard to find, but even harder not to love every single minute. At a steal for eight dollars, there's no reason why Shawshank Redemption should be overlooked by any movie goer.

| I truly believe this is Tim Robbins' best performance...and perhaps the same is true of Morgan Freeman. The film centers on those we encounter in life and assume to be the good versus those who we are predisposed to believe evil. Juxtaposed brilliantly, we clearly find our assumptions have been manipulated and even violated by the institutions we trust. It is a movie of redemption, but not in the manner one would predict at the movie's onset. |
