The Bottom Line:

Day-Lewis sometimes goes too far over the top ("Because it is my name!!!") and the actor playing Reverand Hale seems like he was ported in to Salem directly from the 1970s, but the successes of this film adaptation outweigh the failures and make this a movie worth seeing, if not a great one.

Miller goes astray with his own imagination. This is a good looking film with easy to look at talent all around. The story however is pure Hollywood BS. What happened was an incident of a African slave teaching some local girls about her native spiritual customs which included using an ergot style drug. The resultant hallucinations and behavior so scared the heavily oppressive church officials that they quickly condemned to girls to death as witches, using a kangaroo court to scare and intimidate the people from any further experimenting.

Although not in the same chronology the screen versions remains true to the spirit of the playwright. Arthur Miller of course wrote teh screenplay, but itlends itself to an interpretation worthy of the original drama.

One of the better movie adaptations of a classic 50's play.
With the deportation to Cuba of terrorist suspects, the USA like in the
red hunting of the 50's has a witch hunt in the early 21st century.
The difference between scholarly knowledge and real wisdom and understanding is pointed out by this theme. The Catch 22 effect of confessing to a lie
in order to save your life just makes one angry in watching this film at a systematic law that has no justice and real sense?
The hero of the movie dies by hanging
while reciting the Lord's prayer.
The acting is very good and believable, but the script is expanded and the wording changed from the play.
There are repeating themes in history and
one of them is groundless persecution of minorities
and those with different ideas or backgrounds from the ordinary.

I bought the movie to show to my junior English class. Aside from the brief nudity (which will get some of my student's attention), the movie adheres fairly close to the play and fits nicely in the literature unit. I had never seen it before and was impressed with the power displayed by the actors and director. I have never reviewed a movie before, but this definately fit my purpose for the class.

A cautionary tale showing the dangers of misguided societal pressure, and the importance of leaders that should lead society, instead of following it. This movie dramatically brings to life the play we all had to read in school. Well directed with many of the best actors giving outstanding performances. A must see film.
