"The essential introduction to Scrum"

This was the first book I ever read on scrum. Actually the first on any agile software development topic. I read this book after a peer in my organization started doing scrum with his teams. He gave a brief overview of how it worked and I was immediately interested in trying it out as an alternative to the waterfall project management we were currently using.
The book provided a great introduction. We took great pains to do Scrum by the book - in order to get to the place where we were good enough at Scrum that we could have informed opinions about what we would change.
This book - like many - do not address how to scale scrum to a larger organization. We figured that out on our own. It also doesn't really discuss engineering practices, this is more of a project management book. Without good engineering practices, any project management methodology will fail. But the basic ideas in this book are gold. You should read it, apply it and start reaping the benefits of iterative software development, i.e., quality, productivity, predictability, continuous improvement, morale improvement, etc.

This book is essential reading for anyone starting out with agile software development using Scrum. As a management methodology, Scrum is relatively simple to implement but has truly transformational effects! I have implemented Scrum in many software development teams now, which I regularly blog about on the All About Agile blog. This book really does make a great introduction to the process of Scrum, and you will find tons more free information on Scrum and many other aspects of agile software development here: [...] I thoroughly recommend this book to all agile newbies :-)

"A good read if you want to be convinced why you should try Scrum"

This is a gentle introduction to Scrum, written mainly for the people who manage programmers and software development projects. It doesn't so much teach how to implement Scrum, as it is a comforting explanation of why you should try it, and why it will work for you. Especially when everything else has failed. It also shows how to sell the methodology to the programmers who will be living with it, and to senior managers, business peers, and software customers.
Read this if you've heard of Scrum, and want to know more. Get more Scrum books, and get some training, before you actually implement it.
My first exposure to Mr. Schwaber's work on Agile development was through one of his later books, Agile Project Management with Scrum (Microsoft Professional). I would recommend that other book more highly than this. This one conveys more of the history of how Scrum developed through practice and for that it is a good resource. Knowing why some aspects are not included and having the benefit of the author's train of thought on the topic is useful. But it can also be cumbersome to sift through those lessons learned without the book seeming a bit disorganized. Therefore, if you have time for only one book on this topic, I would recommend the other mentioned. A good resource but not the best from Mr. Schwaber.
