OK, so when this album was first releasd I was Hilary Duff obsessesd. Now I've gotten over that but I still won't pass up a chance to listen to her (especially this album). It starts out with the very insperational first single "Fly". This is one of my favorite songs on the album because it makes me feel I'm unstoppable. "Do Ya Want Me?" is a very cute pop song, although most of this album is more rock influinced. "Weird" is well... weird, but I love it. It's kind of random, and short (2nd shortest on the album @ 2:56) but I'm glad that it's on the album. "Hide Away" isn't my favorite, neither is "Mr. James Dean". "Underneath This Smile" is a very cool song... but "Dangerous To Know" is Hilary Duff's best song ever. That would have made an awesome music video. Hilary also shines in "Who's That Girl" which, according to her, is about her personal life meeting her fame life. "Shine" is a forgetful track. "I Am" is another star track. Very insperational. "The Getaway" is my third favorite track. It's about an on and off realtionship. "Cry" is good, but it gets kind of boring after a while, same with "Haters". "Rock This World" is a nice rock tune. Another highlight: "Someone's Watching Over Me", a fantistic song (that just happens to be my second fave on the album) about a lost loved one. (It makes since if you've ever seen "Rasie Your Voice", one of Hilary's movies). Also in that movie is "Jericho", which is a nice pop song approitly placed right after "Someone's Watching Over Me". The Last Song on the CD (apptly titled "The Last Song") is just a boring outro. (Pretty much a new "Inner Strength" from her "Metamorphsis" album). But anyway buy the album.
My favorites: Fly, Do Ya Want Me, Weird, Dangerous to Know, Who's That Girl, I Am, The Getaway, Rock This World, Someone's Watching Over Me, Jericho. |

"Deliciously Dirty Riffs from America's Sweetheart" | 2007-10-27 |

I am a 31 year old male who is mainly into jazz, experimental, and film music, but there is something about the records that Hilary and her fellow pop star Avril make that, well, feels right. Dunno why, because I generally hate any pop star whose first name is not "Prince," but these two make the cut. They sing directly on the melody, without the phony-baloney embellishments we all know from the deservedly less revered performers of American Idol. And they sell their sexuality without Madonna-style antics that really always add up to publicity stunts to cover the reality of not-so-hot chicks. Hilary and Avril are great to look at, entertaining and oddly therapeutic to listen to, and they seem to genuinely be trustworthy bearers of North American global goodwill.
The dirty riffs of the this review's title are actually only on a few tracks, but that's enough to make this a daring effort for a seventeen year old Nickelodeon veteran. "Weird" and "Rock This World" are notable in this respect. Hilary and her sister contribute compositionally to a few tracks, including the rocker "Haters," which is a plus. "Mr. James Dean" is exactly the kind of song Jimmy would have wanted sung about him by a girl who has a Natalie Wood, tight sweater quality that recalls his most famous film. And if I had daughters, I would want them to listen closely to "I Am." I wish many of my former love interests had.
As for Avril vs. Hilary, Avril has since topped this album with her current work, "The Best Damn Thing, " but I see room for Hilary to outpace her if she takes the riff-driven tracks she developed on this album and converts them into a more adult sound for her maturing audience.
This is not a perfected work, but it is the best I have heard from Hilary, and it is better than the vast majority of the pop albums that come out these days. One only wonders what great things might happen if she formed a permanent band and started to develop the synergy from which great masterpieces are recorded. Five stars. |
