Here is what people are saying about the Crimes Against Logic: Exposing the Bogus Arguments of Politicians, Priests, Journalists, and Other Serial Offenders
5 Star Rating  "Why would a religious person but a book about logic?"2009-09-13

This book is great! It was written well and exposes the many logical fallacies that exist in the public realm. Now, if you are looking for Quine or David Lewis, you're going to be disappointed. These are philosophical arguments on the common usage of informal logic. This is not a math book or a bible, and if you have a problem with logic being applied to the resurrection of Jesus, do not get this book. If you don't like logic, don't buy a book about logic, right? For the rest of you that enjoy a quick and fun read, get it. You won't be disappointed!

I suppose I am writing a short opinion because it was good enough to warrant a reaction. From the cover you would think it would have been a hilarious decimation of humans holding on to their inconsistencies. In fact, it wasn't. I appreciated the reminders of the logical inconsistencies most of us engage in as things we ought to try and avoid. But his own premises were often far too shallow, not necessarily bad for a short book aimed at entertaining as well as educating, but shallow in a simplistic sense. The book does well in setting up straw man arguments without acknowledgment of premises as likely being more complex. However, many of the premises are truly simple and warrant the taunts promised on the book cover, even if the taunts are not really all that scathing.

Knowledge and truth are tough stuff to understand deeply. Don't expect insight here. But some pointers in everyday rational missteps might be found.

Crimes Against Logic is a short logical look at the influential platform of our thought processes and reasoning. It provides the reader the clearer ability to practically see life on non emotional terms, deceiver facts from myths, and encourages better decision making.
Excellent book, full of humor, and wise cracks.
An enjoyable read.
I especially recommend this book for teens.

Elementary logic is simple when you have time, energy and detachment. But we are so inundated with faulty logic and muddled thinking that the effect is numbing: we don't notice it anymore. In this little book Jamie Whyte takes a step back, and exposes these errors. And he does so in a very entertaining way.

Each chapter in this book is devoted to a different type of logical error. Most of them are so simple (or rather, are explained so well) that it is amazing we let people get away with them.

Whyte is not afraid to be provocative. His analysis of religious thought has quite a bite to it. But that does not mean that the book is anti-religious. Whyte is just as ruthless with faulty arguments that are more prevalent among atheists. Either way, Whyte often points out that the use of a faulty argument in itself does not invalidate an opinion, and I would urge readers to bear that in mind.

Talking about opinions, the first chapter tries to refute the statement that "everyone is entitled to their own opinion". At face value, there is nothing wrong with that statement. But, as Whyte points out, there are so many layers of meaning in that one little sentence, all of them prone to abuse, that the mere use of the statement in an argument is a huge red flag. Whyte makes his point in a way that makes you smile, and makes you think. Once you see his point, it's hard to put down the book until the end.

Although the book is quite funny at times, there is a serious undertone. And one of the most serious issues discussed - one that makes the book more than a logic self-help book - is the observation that many people are not really interested in the truth. They use faulty logic as a barrier that insulates them from the truth. The genuine truth-seeker is a lonely person in our society.

The purchase of this book was predicated on the assumption that it would be intellectually provocative. I'm sorry to say that I was mistaken. The cost of learning this was the purchase price and a couple irreplaceable hours of life.

I find it hard to believe that Jamie Whyte was a past lecturer of philosophy at a prestigious institution such as Cambridge University. The dictates of logic have led me to the assumption that an oral presentation given as a class assignment in an introduction to philosophy course is the source of the self-aggrandizing title of "past lecturer."

The book is surprisingly riddled with a high degree of anti-religious prejudice that functions mostly to give it a superficial and anti-intellectual tone. It serves nothing except to detract from real intellectual reasoning (it's okay to be anti-religious...but at least be smart about it). As an example, Whyte cynically attempts to debunk the Christian mystery of the blessed trinity by using math. Basically: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit equal 1+1+1. Because 3 is more than 1 then the trinity can't exist as one God...then follows the predictable conclusion that the blessed trinity is illogical and Christian belief is fanciful. This is a fascinating example of the early adolescent concrete reasoning that tends to permeate the book. [For example: I have a pet; my pet is furry, my pet is playful, my pet is hungry...1+1+1 = 3. As I only have one pet (and consider myself a monopetist)...it's either none of those things and actually my pet doesn't exist (making my pet food expenditures a huge mistake)...or I have three pets and just don't know it (making me a polypetist). My 9 year old daughter has successfully corrected Whyte's mistakes and provided this simple analogy] "Crimes Against Logic" should have been proofread by an accomplished individual, possibly a doctor of philosophy, skilled in the use of intellect, reason, and abstract thought.

To be fair, there are some interesting examples of political rhetoric given that many might find interesting, but nothing anyone couldn't figure out on their own by just taking time to analyze the use of language.

As a lover of books...this is the first one I ever considered throwing away. But reason won out...instead I will use it as a tool to teach my children the proper way to use their intellect and as an example of how prejudice can make the brain blind to its mistakes.

I bought this book thinking it would be along the lines of Freakonomics/Blink/Tipping Point etc., based on Amazon's recommendation. Unfortunately it was drastically different: difficult to follow and not at all entertaining. Big disappointment.
