Here is what people are saying about the Early Bird: A Memoir
3 Star Rating  "A warm and quirky look at retirement"2009-08-20
- Reviewed By resqgeek
When Rodney Rothman finds himself unemployed at 28, he decides to give retirement a try. Why wait until you're old to retire and enjoy yourself, he reasons. So he sets off to find a place for himself in the retirement communities of South Florida. His first obstacle is finding a place to live. He discovers that most of the retirement communities have rules that exclude young people from living in them. Eventually, he finds a widow to rent a room from and settles in to experience the retired lifestyle.

This account of his experiences during the months he tried to live as a retired person is a quirky, sometime irreverent look at what life is like after retirement. Eventually, as Rothman becomes accepted as part of the community, he learns that retirement is as different for each person as anything else in life. He develops surprising friendships, and while he might not learn much about what retirement will be like, he does learn about himself and life. In the end, this is a warm-hearted look at an often overlooked segment of society.

I read this book when it was first published. I was still working up north but had visited south Florida many times. I thought it was very funny. Now that I am a condo owner living full-time in south Florida, I decided to read it again. It is even funnier! All my girl friends have read it and we agree that Rodney has done an excellent job of helping us to laugh at "ourselves" (or our neighbors...)A great reminder to not take life too seriously.

3 Star Rating  "How to retire at 28"2009-03-04

Rodney is 28. Rodney loses his job. Rodney considers going on vacation. Rodney remembers his best vacations--visiting his grandparents at their retirement home in Florida. Rodney decides to retire 40 years early. Just to check it out, you know. He literally moves into a retirement community, renting out a room in an elderly lady's condo. He has a bit of difficulty making friends with his neighbors (they're all pretty friendly until they realize that he isn't anyone's grandson). He joins clubs--lots and lots of clubs. The Newcomers Club, the Not For Women Only Club, the Shuffleboard Club. He makes new friends and is the scared recipient of a seventy-five-year-old woman's come-on (he doesn't go through with it). He finds the foulest-mouthed old woman in the world (and ends up yelling at her). Throughout the six plus months, we go with Rodney as he experiences the world of retirement and does some investigating into his future.

Not as funny as advertised...but are they ever, really? Not a bad memoir, pretty funny at times. It bothered me a bit that he moved to the retirement community with the book idea in mind, so some of it seems a bit contrived. Overall it was a good read--the elderly friends he makes are pretty darn funny sometimes.
