I recently purchased 3 books on this subject. This was the most expensive yet the weakest in terms of content. Korfhage does a good job of summarizing the field but provides only an overview of each issue. With a large type format, this book does not provide a lot of information. The references at the end of each chapter are extensive, however. This would be a 5 star book at half the price, but the steep price tag is not justified for what one actually gets. I was feel somewhat misled by the preceding 100% 5-star rating this book received.

Korfhage does an excellent job covering a wide variety of storage and retrieval methods, providing the reader a well balanced overview of the field. The extensive references at the end of each chapter make further research very easy, however, most chapters are quite technical and will satisfy many readers' needs. The only shortcommings were the lack of case studies and somewhat brief coverage of internet search engines, relatively minor gripes for such a broad-ranging book.

A must have for everyone who wants to learn about information retrieval. It starts from the beggining and explains everything in a very comprehensive way.
