Here is what people are saying about the Elliott Smith - from a basement on the hill
5 Star Rating  "One of the True Elliotts"2010-01-30
- Reviewed By J. A. Neptune
Everyone seems to have a proprietary take on Elliott. People who came to him with this album will probably always feel this is the quintessential Elliott, whereas those who knew his earlier stuff tend to be put off by the more elaborate and rockist arrangements here.

This was my first contact with Elliott, and I quite fell in love with the album. I had been listening to Grandaddy's "Under the Western Freeway" and "Sumday" right before I started listening to "From a Basement. . ", and as a result I at first deducted points from Elliott for less originality.

But the allegiance to Beatles forms really matters less and less the more you get in touch with Elliott's emotional state as he's putting the songs across. Repeated listenings reveal a craftsman at the top of his game, and an insistence on not engaging in self-pity. Even when he at first sounds self-pitying, you realize that hidden in that agony is a critque of himself, as well as a statement of alienation.

As with Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, your connection and amazement increases once you know all the lyrics. Your enjoyment bumps up dramatically when your understanding goes up from 80% to 98% (See lyred.com for lyrics). You understand how much Elliott was enjoying creating and singing these songs, and it makes it very difficult to believe that he would have wanted to kill himself after having created them. The album sounds like he's made it through his storms, and is at peace on the other side of them.

I think he actually sounded more depressed on "Figure 8" ("I have become a silent movie. . . "; "Better Be Quiet Now"; the song "Happiness"; "Somebody That I Used to Know"; the morbid piano coda at the end of the album).

Here, he sounds more distanced from his pain, as if he's spent a lot of time thinking things through, either with or without a therapist. So the songs are felt, but also sometimes have an admirable level of detachment: "Coast to Coast", "Memory Lane", "Shooting Star", "Pretty (Ugly Before). Sometimes they're NOT detached: "The Last Hour" especially, and "Twilight", are a bit more direct and vulnerable. But the insistence on emotional truth remains the same throughout.

Elliott really is the spiritual heir of John Lennon, the guts on the floor Lennon of "Plastic Ono Band" and "Imagine". Like John, he knows how to work with filters and masks and changes in mood, but it's all in the service of connecting with other people, and being vulnerable, not distancing himself from others.

XO and Figure 8 are fine albums. But "From a Basement" is equally fine, in its own way, and still just as shiningly honest. Elliott didn't want to repeat himself here. Don't disrespect him because he chose not to, and because he stretched his production and style techniques.

He was and is the real deal, here, as elsewhere.

3 Star Rating  "Unfortunately, Elliott's last was also his worst"2009-06-06

I first heard Elliott Smith's music in 1995, shortly after I moved to the U.S. My local radio station would play "Clementine" quite a bit, and it wasn't long before I fell in love with his self-titled album and quickly decided to track down a copy of his first album, "Roman Candle", which is still my favorite album of his and one of my favorite albums of all time. His next two albums, "Either/Or" and "XO", are both excellent, and "Figure 8" is very good. After four excellent albums, I was very disappointed in his posthumous release "From a Basement on the Hill".

For the most part, the songs on his final album are considerably darker than his previous efforts, but they also lack the depth of his earlier work. The musicianship is subpar, and the songwriting leaves a lot to be desired. The three best songs on the album are "Pretty (Ugly Before)", "A Fond Farewell", and the beautifully produced "Twilight". These songs sound much more like the Elliott I came to love 14 years ago - quality songwriting and well-written arrangements.

Overall, the album is worth at least a couple of listens, but I think it's well below the level of his other five albums and "New Moon", the recent collection of Elliott's unreleased material.

I've recently begun listening to Elliot Smith and this is my first CD to own. It's quite good and I am anticipating acquiring more music from Mr. Smith.

If I had to listen to just one artist forever in the afterlife, it would be Elliott. Elliott is the greatest artist I have ever known, and I have listened to all of the greats thoroughly. I would like to think that 500 years into the future, if the world still exists as a free place where humans live (I doubt it), that Elliott would someday claim his rightful place as the Mozart of this 100+ year period. He has filled my life with happiness and beauty, and I wish I could give him a hug and say thanks.

I was hooked after the first two tracks.

Does Elliot Smith have any bad material?

Think Twilight and you begin to understand the Elliot Smith sound. As a fan moving from Beatles, 70's Art Rock, The Cure and Grunge, Elliot came as a pleasant surprise and I hear elements of all those in his music. His sound is hauntingly familiar, yet sweetly original. This is a great album, full of variety. My favorites change as I listen to it. Like peeling an onion, the deeper I go the more I find and it almost makes me cry.
