This is a fine selection from Brel's broad and astonishing body of work, as noted by other reviewers. What a pity we don't all know French! It really does help, as Brel is a true poet. Thelma's prose translations in the liner notes are helpful, but of course don't try to capture Brel's brilliant prosody....

You can hear excellent new English translations by the Black Veils of four of Brel's songs -- "Jaurès," "Ne me quitte pas" ("Don't Leave Me"), "Il neige sur Liège" ("Snowfall on Liège") and "Mai 40" -- here at Amazon:

It is a marvelous introduction to the great art of Jacques Brel (1929-1978), the poet and singer. Forty songs, some never completed or released, in fantastic sound, covering every facet of his moods, from his disgust of hypocrisy (e.g., Les bourgeois, Les bigotes), to nostalgia for his native Belgium (Le plat pays), to love's travails (Marieke, Ne me quitte pas, Madeleine), to accepting his own mortality (Le dernier repas). Some songs are humourous, others gut-wrenching, all sung with intense feeling. From this selection, you really get the essence of the man and his genius.

My only quibble, and hence not a full five-star rating, is that this 2-CD compilation comes without the original (French) lyrics. Totally inexcusable when celebrating a word-smith like Brel, "parolier et compositeur".

A wonderful CD of one of the best writers and performers of our time. The singing oozes with intensity. Also, not so bad to get 40 songs on one CD.

You don't have to know too much french too feel Brel's music.
The French version of "The Quest" from Man of la Mancha is a great version, and the disc came with a booklet with the english translation of every song, so you can have an idea of what he's singing. If youy are a true musician and like novelties, this is a great disc.
