Though this Porter-Cable tool is priced higher than comparable DeWalt and Makita models, the 557 is a top-selling plate joiner. Its success is perhaps due to its very powerful 7-1/2 amp motor--the largest in the industry--which turns the blade at 10,000 rpm and does an excellent job of making clean cuts in any kind of wood. As well as cutting slots for the standard no. 0, 10, and 20 biscuits, Porter-Cable's joiner features an exclusive, full-thickness, FF biscuit developed especially for cabinet face frames. We found the microheight adjustment works well, allowing for precise biscuit placement. The tool is well balanced and comfortable to use. --Michael Shilling

Have made several good pieces with this tool from step up stools to full out custom exotic wood cabinets. Never had a problem with the tool or its use on wooden projects, have cut 45's and 22 1/2's for frames and homeade columns and never a complaint. Cut your slots, dry fit the parts, put on the titebond glue and clamp up the pieces. I sometimes put mine on a piece of 3'x3' plywood and a block on either side to hold the tool dead still and not slip to the side, this can and does provide very good accuracy if you need the extra help. Overall an excellent tool for joining wood tightly and accurately.

I have used the joiner four times. Easy to set up and use. It is very accurate. The only negative thing I have found is the exposed springs that control the return of the saw blade, otherwise this would rate five stars. This is not a big deal. Well worth the money.

There's an old saying: You get what you pay for. I know things are financially squeaky for most of us these days, but tools should be considered as investments.

It pays off to buy good tools, and the Porter-Cable 557 is a good-un. Right out of the box you can feel the precise assembly of the plates, guides and adjustments.

So far I've used the joiner for two sessions in making an octagonal louvered vent for the attic. On this occasion I joined boards at a 22.5 degree angle, and then another set at more traditional 90. It was surprisingly easy to setup and use.

Be sure and read the manual for the finer adjustments.

I did have to take a sharpie and highlight the center sightline on the clear guard.

Also occasionally pressed the trigger lock by accident, but these are minor.

This is my first Porter-Cable tool. I will be looking at more of this brand in the future.

Owned mine for over 6 years, use it at least once a month on all types of wood and plywood. Still on the original blade and it cuts like a dream. Probably my single favorite power tool because 1. it's idiot proof by design and safe, 2. it is consistent and always aligns properly and 3. It does all the work like a power tool should. I HIGHLY recommend you check out "BISCUIT JOINERY BUILD A BOOKCASE with Frank Klausz". He uses this exact tool and the video is available right here on Amazon. I used mine for years before I saw this video, I learned several cool tricks that made my work faster and more accurate. I always use Porter Cable biscuits with Tightbond glue (spread with acid disposable brushes), never had a joint fail as of yet!
