"Happy Homogenized Christmas!" | 2007-11-29 |

It's a perfectly plain and digestible Christmas album, just don't expect to be moved. You're better off with Mariah Carey's "Merry Christmas" instead.
The best example of how bland this album is her and ex-hubby Nick Lachey's version of "Baby it's cold outside."
It's just about the deadest rendition of this song ever. It's a nuanced and funny song that's she turns humorless and forgettable -- no easy feat. Listen to just about any other version and you'll see, I recommend Brian Setzer's duet with Ann Margaret.
Do yourself a favor and look for a Christmas album that's a little more heartfelt. |

| I love the songs that were on this cd and thats why I bought it. However she over does many of the words in the song turning a listener off. Nick and Ashlee both do good jobs which saves her in some of them. Would not recommend, rather go with Trans-Siberan Orchestra. |

| No problems with the sender. Very nice and without issues. The CD however, was terrible. I bought it for my fiance and I dont think she listened to more than about 2 songs. |

"Decent, but not superb" | 2006-03-11 |

| Jessica Simpson shelled out more product for the media frenzy made after getting insta-famous due to 2003's MTV Newlyweds, and this is just a tiny piece of it. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to expectations and would probably not have been made if she hadn't received A-list fame due to the so-called "reality" show (which also turned out to be a hock after she admitted to having to act or say certain lines, a.k.a. scripted). Though Simpson once had a powerful instrument, she has lost it among her utteral growls and attempts to sound as sexy as Britney Spears does on record; this is evident on songs like "Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)," a beautiful ballad with a lot of potential that Jessica sings throaty--"What Child Is This?" is also a fine example of this new way she sings, as if she's choking on something. There are some decent performances on record here (glitzied up, of course, as anything this "dumb blonde" has done these days) especially on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" where she and then-hubby Nick Lachey pound out a warmy version of the Christmas classic. If you're a Simpson fan then you're sure to find this more intriguing than someone who isn't and solely wants good old Christmas music, but it's a decent, though somewhat disappointing (due to her performances on Rejoyce), attempt nonetheless. The cover art alone is a reason to admire the CD, with a picture of a beautiful Jessica Simpson covering the colors of Christmas (long, curly gold locks against a red background). |

"southern gospel? nightclub? what is she doing?" | 2005-12-12 |

There is a hint that Jessica has a good voice, but apparently she is not sure where she belongs. Some of the songs have a southern Gospel feel, and I must confess, that personally, I do not like that wailing type of music. But, if you do, you will like SOME of the tracks. However, on other tracks, she uses this breathy quality, that I suppose, is trying to imitate a sexy nightclub singer. These two styles do not work well together. Except for die-hard Jessica fans, this is not a particularly good album. It is ho-hum pop and even less attractive as Christmas music. At times I am reminded of Marilyn Monroe singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President." The problem is that Marilyn was NOT known as a singer. Jessica needs to rethink her presentation. Only buy this album if you think Jessica is the greatest thing since Edison invented the light bulb.

I loved Jessica's first two albums. She showed amazing talent and a gorgeous, incredibly powerful voice. If Jessica had done this album when she first came out and sounded amazing, this would be the best ever. But upon the release of her third CD, something changed! For the worse. I don't know if she is trying to sound sexy or what, but it sure doesn't work for her. On the track "The Little Drummer Boy", her sister Ashlee clearly outdoes her in the vocals! Even studio magic cannot make her sound good any more. I have to say this CD does have some really great songs on it, but I can't listen to most of them because she sounds so bad! Her voice actually BREAKS on O Holy Night! She needs to fire her producer and sing the way she used to, the way that made her famous! This CD does get played (while I skip most of the songs with the bad singing, such as O Holy Night, and the poor rendition of Breath Of Heaven), because of the fact that is has some really good songs on it I can't find anywhere else, and while I like the style she used to sing the songs very much (the high notes and all) she doesn't have the gusto to pull it off anymore, and it just sounds like screeching. Get your beautiful voice back, Jessica! I am a huge fan but if your next CD is as bad as the last two, i'm not buying it.
If you don't mind bad singing or if you just don't know good singing technique well enough to know the difference between bad or good, go ahead and buy it. You won't be dissapointed with the songs she chose. |
