Some of these Tracks sound like they were recorded under 12 feet of Water & some of the Songs featured are incomplete and unfinished as well. BUT...I sure am glad somebody out there let us hear them...Nobody is gonna force you to buy this, But, i'm glad to own it...it's, Raw John, But like most of his Work, it's timeless and worth a listen...4 STARS... |

This is a piece of Lennon history. It travels from some intimate moments with John, to some stellar live performances. The album moves at a nice pace, it doesn't drag at all. The three live recordings are very good. Real Love sounds great here. What caught me by surprise was Look At Me. Though it has a great message, the sound of the original always turned me off a bit. This version helped me to embrace John's lyrics.
For some reason, Amazon lists an extra track, "I'm A Man". This is not a track on the album. Check the back cover, shown as a customer image, to see for yourself. |

Look out for the attempt to "fix" the original cassette recordings by adding a "chorus effect" to the recordings. For those guitarists out there, you'll know the effect as soon as you hear it. It's used by a lot of guitarist to a highly pleasing effect...ON GUITARS!! Occasionally you'll hear it on voices but it's downplayed in a recording mix to not be annoying (too much of a good thing). Here, we have it front and center, and rather tastelessly obsuring what might have been a good experience for the Lennon 'fly on the wall' fans. Personally I have every Beatle and Beatle Solo recording and was truly looking forward to getting this. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!! Although I will join the Yoko bashers here (I insist that I'm a supporter of Lennon's life decisions), and say she can now rerelease this material without the horrible effect and make some more money. Zero stars for the recording, 3 Stars for John. More stars if I could actually hear the music.... BTW- why not a cd of completely unreleased material? Oh, almost forgot, nice touch with the artwork design concept though. |

Not an acoustic presence like Gorka or Shindell, but rivals some of the best acoustic CD's by pop/rock people such as the acoustic effort of Steve Kilbey of "The Church."
Any Beatles or Lennon fan should give this a listen. It is very interesting, and gives a glimpse into John's complex soul. |

This album is a collection of demos and live songs that are meant to expose Lennon's songs completely and to give an insight to the core of his songs.
It works. All the songs are just Lennon and his acoustic guitar. So you get the bare essential of the music. This is definitely worth buying if you like Lennon's work.
But make sure that you've listened to the studio recordings before exploring this album. I highly recommend the brand new release, "The Definitive Lennon". |

| I bought the cd,just to have.I have most of the songs on other discs, but wanted to hear the disc,to see if it was very different from the versions of the songs that eveyone has heard.I liked it alot, some of the versions are brilliant.I already knew how to play the songs on guitar, but what was really cool was they put the chords over the words where they change,as well as put chord diagrams in the book too.Great idea for helping beginning guitarists learn these songs.Back when I learned them I had to put on the vinyl record and sit there with my guitar and figure out the chords in order to play the songs. You could buy the sheet music or book to go along with the Lps but the chords were usually wrong,or in the wrong key.If I remember right I think it said in the booklet it was Yoko`s idea to inclued the chords and the chord diagrams, what a great idea it was. |

"Not an essential album" | 2005-08-19 |

The acoustic idea behind this album depends on the perspective you look at it. For beginners on Lennon discography please be aware that this is not an essential album and definitely not the best approach to start in the Lennon discography.
Is this an acoustic album? Yes. But it is also a selection of acoustic performances from plenty of sources, so if you are expecting a high quality acoustic material you will be disappointed. Extracts from concerts, studio jams and home recordings are what this album is made of, the sound quality is awful (even though they are supposed to have been remastered) and mostly on the home recordings.
Some of Lennon's classics are here `Working class hero', `God', "Love', `Watching the wheels', `Real love' and of course `Imagine' and other less commercial songs from his discography are present as well. This album is definitely a must for Lennon collectors as it presents an intimate facet of our beloved artist, some of the home recordings are even accompanied by dialogues from when they were made. It is a nice complement if you own the `Wonsaponatime' anthology released a couple of years ago.
There is a whole commercial idea behind this album and Yoko dares to dedicate the album to all guitar players of the world, I wonder if Lennon would approve this use for his music. Do not be deceived and be aware of what this album offers, if you are looking for a compilation of Lennon songs I highly recommend the recently re-released `Legend', that one at least offers only studio material with a pretty good sound quality.
A must for Lennon collector's willing to pay for an album that came from home audiotapes and extracted audios from concerts.
