"Great start to a series" | 2009-12-26 |

A somehow very oriental story about a were tiger trapped in puzzle box by an evil magician. Dela buys the box and inadvertently frees Hari at least temporarily. Well done plot and an interesting collection of paranormal talents masquerading as a detective agency. Of course a dragon is involved and we have a verity of compelling well drawn characters. Nicely done erotic scenes without the explicit sex that has come to too often clutter up the genre.
Outstanding read. |

"Are you kidding me? This story rocks! LOVED it!" | 2009-12-02 |

While working in China, Sword maker and artist, Dela Reese, visits Beijing's Dirt Market and is sold a mysterious box with a curious riddle attached to it. When she finally gets the box open, imagine her surprise when a handsome, seven foot tall warrior pops out like a genie from a bottle.
Enslaved to the owner of the magic box he's tied to, one-time shape shifter, Hari, is wary of the half naked woman who has summoned him. Cursed by a dark magi two thousand yrs ago and forced to commit unspeakable acts, he longs to be free from his wretched existence.
Although not unaware of the magical side of life and a psychically gifted person herself, even Dela has hard time believing Hari's story. But when faced with the evidence that every word he's spoken is true, her kind hearted nature shines forth as she sets about to help him find his freedom.
Hari follows Dela across the world, desperately hoping that finally- FINALLY- he's found a person to trust, all the while helpless to stop protecting her- especially when faced with the reappearance of his ancient adversary, the dark magi who wants nothing more than to kill Dela and get his hands back on the mystical box.
Danger, intrigue and the healing power of love abounds in this sensual, and well developed novel. Liu is a talented story teller. I found her writing flawless and thought on more than one occasion that THIS was the story that should have been Cabal's from Lora Leigh's Breed series (Bengal's Heart). (True, one is a Tiger Shifter and the other a genetically enhanced Mix Breed- but, well, you get the idea!)
Hari and Dela fell in love very quickly, but they didn't fight it. The sexual tension was kept high throughout the novel, even though the author kept them from the inevitable culmination of their passionate relationship till towards the end. I loved both the Hero and the Heroine, as well as the side characters who make up the Dirk and Steele detective agency. (Cannot wait to get to some of their stories!)
Tiger Eye is billed as the first Dirk & Steele novel, but somehow it felt like there may have been some before it? Still, it's a perfectly fine place to begin the series and I found myself rushing out and buying the rest. |

"So much better than the plot summary indicates!" | 2009-09-26 |

| I've read Liu's Hunter Kiss series and became interested in her previous works. When I initially read some of the plot summaries, which read something like: while on vacation in China, blond American Dela Resse purchases a mysterious box, which turns out to hold Hari, a tiger shape shifter who will fulfill all Dela's desires and grant all her wishes, but who really ends up enslaved? I was a little put off by the heavily romantic aspect, but I should have known Liu's work would be so much more than a trite romance novel. Tiger Eye contains the same depth of vivid detail and complexity of character that Liu's later works have. While there is a strong romance that develops between Dela and Hari, it's well handled and fraught with interesting complications. I enjoyed Tiger Eye and am glad it's a part of a series--I look forward to reading more about Dirk & Steele. |

| I had read recent Marjorie Liu novels (The Iron Hunt, Hunter Kiss series) and really liked them. I read a chapter of one of the Dirk & Steel books and wanted to read more. I started with Tiger Eye, and read them all, mostly on my Kindle. There are 8 published in this series, another due in August of this year. They are very cleverly written, interesting characters, and fun to read. They go magical and mysterious places. Definitely a good read. |

"A Rare Treat" | 2009-05-21 |

This book, which is the first in a series and the first I've ever read by Liu, is surprisingly enjoyable. It is the tale of a shape-shifter named Hari who has been trapped in a sort of genie-in-a-box situation as a slave for two thousand years. He falls into the hands of Dela, a woman of unusual psychic talents. Naturally, romance ensues. But Dela is a marked woman, having been targeted by mob members seeking revenge for a crime she had little to do with, and it falls to Hari to help protect her.
What I enjoyed about this book was the fast paced plot--I was never bored or tempted to skim. I also found the cast of characters to be extremely amusing.
The only flaw as far as I'm concern was that the main villain, the Magi, was a bit hokey. I just didn't understand his reasons or motivations. However, I don't feel this detracts significantly from the quality of the story. |
