Saw BJM in the movie DIG, and just knew he had something. So I spent money I didn't have and got this 2 Cd glimpse into their earlier works. No disappointment here, more like a new love for music. Kinda like the first time a Stones or Beatles song really got hold of you. BJM is in that super star realm, but no one seems to be aware of them, except online. As my first BJM album this was the best door to have opened. I might not have had the same experience starting with the latest- My Bloody Underground. This prepared me for that and I am truly glad because I can really appreciate what many are disappointed by and not ready for. This has many of Anton's real classics and the whole album flows well. Anton Newcomb is the real deal, not a poser. Like the movie said, this is what he does and if it didn't work out he would not go get a job. The man was homeless while making these songs, and as far as stage hissy fits, etc. , he is just a bad drunk. No alcohol for you Anton. Just play til insanity takes over, you are great. We love you. Back to the Retrospective, one of the electric guitarists has this knack for memorable chord progressions. I really love all the unique instruments hidden in the mix. This an album you can be proud to pay hard earned cash for and get treated tomorrow and the nexxxxttttttttc. Not like the cash you spent on gas to buy it. High, 'er Highly Recommended. Buy first before the other BJM albums. Drone Drone Drone!!!

This double CD is fantastic. I highly recommend it. Surreal rock songs incredibly played and powerfully sung. After first hearing this American band while in France, I have listened to this CD over and over since buying on it Amazon after I returned to the USA.

Right. I bought this after watching Dig! - mainly because the music sounded wicked-cool and the visuals rocked. Impulse purchase, I guess. For the most part Tepid Peppermint Wonderland is great, the only problem is that there's so much material on the two dics! There's simply no way to listen to this record and go - 'Wow! I'm totally hooked!' and leave it sitting in your CD player for three weeks - just too much going on, I'm afraid. So for now I'm patienly getting to know (and love) this record little by little. Just don't buy this thinking that it's going to instantly make BJM the greatest thing you've ever heard. It takes a bit of time, but it is well worth the effort. |

This is a nice, all-encompassing collection of BJM. It includes songs from all the categories of their music, which is more good than bad. BJM has stuff that really lives up to the band's classification as a neo-psychedelic role-model, but also a lot of stuff that would be better described as a predecessor to current trends in contemporary indie rock. That is to say, the latter is more "hard", with chords dominating, rather than any 1960's-style lead electric guitar melody. You will notice that BJM's albums tend to stick closely to one style, and then make the next album, perhaps, completely differently; but since this is a compilation, you will not find this to be the case here.
Overall, it's a pretty good introduction to The Brian Jonestown Massacre, although it does have some faults. The organization of the songs could have been better, considering they had two whole CD's to mess with (i.e., could have lined up the songs more "logically"). However, you WILL find any super-great song that you might have heard (from which you presumably decided to research BJM because you liked the style) on the album.

| I have loved The Brian Jonestown Masscre ever since I first saw them play in SF back in the early 90s. This retrospective is an excellent collection of their work dating from the conception of the band in the 90s up until today. Its a collection that can be appreciated by old fans as well as those who are new to the band. As for the music, well its indescribeable. You have to hear to to believe it! |

The Brian Jonestown Massacre are the best band you've never heard of. I've always liked them from the beginning and have talked to Anton Newcombe after several shows. He is just the most ordinary, coolest guy ever, except don't mess with him because he don't take lip. He's also got a very sensitive side also and just wants everyone to listen to his music and start a sort of peaceful revolution, just like in the 60's when they used to make music that was halfway as good as this. He's like ALL-IN-ONE, just like God. Everything he says is like scripture, especailly that thing about Eric clapton's baby-he sucks!!! LOL. All you people are idiots for not listening to this band becasue you're too busy listening to hip-hop crap. VIVA LA UNDERGROUND!!! If you just got into Anton because of D!G, you're just a poseur. I heard of them like back in 2003, so there! |

| BJM really is amazing. The influences range from the obvious psychodelic 60s bands like the Animals all the way to Cure, The Kinks?, Dave Clarke 5 et al. The CD really sets a mood and if you are inclined to put your fold up chair on the apex of your roof and bring out the party favors of your choice then BJM should be exactly what you are looking for. Oh, and Open Heart Surgery is like one of the best songs I have ever heard. |

This was my first intro to TBJM recently. I am now hooked.
It took a few times of listening to really enjoy the various styles of music on this album. I would thoroughly recommend this album as a starting point. There are so many songs to list as my favourites, but the ones that stand to me are "Vacuum Boots", "Anenome", "Just for Today","Nevertheless", and "Starcleaner" is an absolute standout!
Please check out all the other TBJM albums. There are some absolute gems on each, that are not listed on TPW:A Retrospective. I have 51 of their songs that are on my favourites list.( I only have 6 of their albums ).
The Brian Jonestown Massacre is now without doubt one of my all time favourite bands. |

| If you've never stumbled across this band before, this collection is the bargain of the century (I know, the century's young, but...) I've picked up a few BJTM albums here and there, and while I've never failed to find them fun, they can be uneven. But whoever selected and compiled this 2-CD bonanza should get some serious recognition: This is the BEST of the band, lovingly culled from beaucoup (sp?) albums, and the price is ridiculously low. If you ever liked anything about the 60's, The Stones, The Doors, The Byrds, etc. etc. check this out. |

| I haven't been able to find anything good lately, as far as 'modern rock' but this has restored my faith, though, they're 'best' stuff came out about 7 years ago...regardless, i think this is the best 'real' rock music i've heard in ages. i read alot about the comparisons to the Stones and other late 60's bands, but this exceeds them...the music is mostly guitars (3 guitars/1 bass) some drums, a tamborine, a huge variety of other istruments and lyrics that are immediate and 'in the moment.' it's hard to comprehend how much of their catalogue is so strong, all their albums just stand on their own merit. This is the place to start. Enjoy. |
