This product was purchased for my 12 year old grandson. He said it was enjoyable and also challenging. My grandson is an Honor Roll student and excellent State standards of learning scores.
Heroscape as a brand has been around for 5 years, and it was not until this year that I got into it. At it's root, Heroscape is a tabletop strategy game, very much like Risk or Stratego, but on a 3D plane with much more creative and varied armies. Battles in water play out differently than on mountains. Winged kyrie move differently than oafish trolls. Squads require different strategy than individual heroes. Giants are larger targets than spiders. You will control dragons, elves, and trolls, as well as World War II soldiers, alien hordes, or vampires. Ninjas can battle civil war armies. Zombies may clash with Roman gladiators.
To play Heroscape, it's required that you start with at least one master set like this. There are 2 master sets for the game: this one, and Swarm of the Marro, which normally sell for about the same price. Another "mini" master set is available: Marvel: The Conflict Begins, and while cheaper and easier to find, is really nowhere near the value of the others because it contains considerably less terrain and figures, and poorly demonstrates the scope of the game at large. Though the Marvel set is still fun to throw in the mix, it should not be your first Heroscape purchase.
This set (Rise of the Valkyrie) is the better master set to start out with (compared to Swarm of the Marro, though I own both), and may be one of the best values in tabletop gaming period. I have played in competitive tournaments, and I play regularly with my 8-year-old daughter. The basic/master versions of the game make it very easily adaptable based on skill and experience. Most games are 1-2 hours, from box to table to box again. This is a large game as well - it will nearly cover most small dining room tables when set up. Fun can be found in both building the terrain and playing the game.
This set alone may be all you need to play Heroscape regularly at home for years to come, but when you seek a greater challenge, if you want to involve more players, or want to play competitively, you'll need to look into buying the expansion sets and definitely more figures. Experienced players own more than 1 master set (I own one of each: Valkyrie, Marro, and Marvel) in order to build more colossal battlefields and vary the terrain in the game.

My son loves this toy. He likes to create his own maps and the rules are easy to understand. He plans on getting expansion sets in the future to build on the fun.

I purchased this game for my son. We saw it at Walmart and the only master set thay had was the Marvel one. And then the exspansion sets were for the other Master sets. He thought it was the coolest thing ever. So we went online to check it out, and figured out how to play and everything. So I bought him a set. He loves it. Its so detailed. The game pieces are cool, he likes the dragons. Thank you.

I saw this in Wal Mart and kept thinking it looked interesting, but was probably hokey. Turns out it is a lot of fun, not hokey at all. Different from other strategy games in that you can make true 3D maps - a new experience for all but the most hard-core geeks.
My only qualm with the game is that there are a lot of subtleties to the rules that you may have to find out online. Definitely not a game for small children, although they do have a "Basic" ruleset which is ok for some kids.

Great game for the family. I enjoy playing it as much as my kids do. It's a combination of Risk (similar strategy without the time allotment) and pokemon (strength and value of each piece is dictated by the associated card). My young boys enjoy the dueling aspect of it, while the strategy aspect of it is more suited to an older kid. There are two levels of play, so both age groups are entertained. Well worth the money spent.
