There are three types of tool buyers: people using them on the job, serious home do-it-yourselfer's, and occasional users.

I'm an occasional user. However, I like better quality tools since I grew up with them because my father owned a hardware store and cabinet shop. I use DeWalt. However, I also like Bosch, Makita and Milwaukee. I think Bosch and Makita are a bit better than DeWalt, but they're harder to find at a discount, and there is less variety available from the other manufacturers. I own both DeWalt and Makita, and I've used Bosch and Milwaukee.

I also highly recommend that anyone wanting cordless tools stick to 18v or better. DeWalt's 18v NiCad's are pretty good batteries. They have an adequate power curve for torque and reasonable life on the job. But like all NiCad batteries they develop memory, degrade in their charging capacity over time and sometimes get flaky for no apparent reason. DeWalt provides a semi-decent way of conditioning the batteries with a complete power drain, which should be done every 5 or 10 times the battery is charged. The downside is conditioning makes the charging time much longer.

I prefer Lithium's but they're more expensive.

Generally, it's better to buy one brand to keep the batteries, chargers and tools compatible. I went with DeWalt because it is easy to find substantial discounts on combination sets and bare tools (tools with no batteries or chargers). I have nicad batteries now, but today if I were a new buyer, I would go with Lithium.

For my occasional use DeWalt is over kill. I have a number of tools including compound miter saws and table saws that I've only used a few times. Some of my saws have cost me $75 per cut because of limited use. If I weren't so picky about tools for occasional use, I would buy Ryobi. Yeah, they're not high quality but for 3 cuts a year, they work just fine.

Another problem with occasional use of cordless tools is never having a battery charged when you need it. For me, corded tools would have been a good option and one I would favor today. It takes about an hour, or slightly longer, to charge a DeWalt NiCad without conditioning.

DeWalt is pretty good overall. It works well. It's easy to get parts for. Good deals can be had at Amazon and on ebay, and there's plenty of options in a variety of tools.

This DeWalt is a true impact wrench, not an impact driver. I use this to remove things like anode rods from water heaters, which are really tough to get out. This bad boy has plenty of torque, speed and impacts/min to get the job done.

I have a DeWalt impact DRIVER, and it can't do the heavy lifting. However, it works well for screws, small lag bolts and smaller nuts and bolts. I don't use this impact wrench often but when I take it out, it's because there's 20 miles of bad road ahead.

It's big, heavy, and it doesn't fit in tight places, but it delivers the muscle, which is what counts in impact wrenches.

If you need power and durability in an impact driver I would highly recommend this one. I have had this for almost one year now and it is still putting out torque as it did when I first got it.

Bought this impact wrench about 6 mos. ago, to use here to rotate tires and where ever else needed. I have a 1977 3/4 ton. Chevy pickup. The lug nuts are self locking and are a real job to remove, from the wheel. This impact wench handles this situation with ease. This impact wrench will do the job. This web site had this wrench, at a lower price than anyone else.

Good tool, quite powerful. I use it a lot when I work on my truck.
Well built, rugged and strong.
Battery life is great.

However it is very noisy (need protection), has no brake, very heavy and is not as powerful as expected.
Th esocket attachement is not practical at all.

I ordered the Dewalt 6 piece 18 volt tool combo but I didn't realize the included impact wrench was a 1/4". I ordered this 1/2" to use on my track car. It works extremely well. The battery lasts a very long time and the wrench will pull off my 80lb torqued lug nuts even when the battery is starting to go. It's expensive but it's a great tool. Consider when buying that you do get 2 batteries and a charger with it, one of the reasons it's so expensive.
