Editorial ReviewThe wide 21-inch diameter funnel swallows leaves as fast as you can feed them, mincing them down to fine mulch. This little unit is surprisingly powerful, and at only 17 pounds its so light you can mount it atop a trash can or bungee-cord a plastic bag to the outfeed and collect the waste. Out of the box, it goes together literally in minutes with just a screwdriver. The hopper tilts to 45 degrees to make loading easier, and the sliding control lever is easy to read, with settings for grass, thatch, wet leaves, dry leaves and pine needles. Double cutting lines are powered by an 8-amp motor on regular household current, and the motor intake filter comes out easily for cleaning. A built-in storage compartment keeps extra line at the ready, and changing cutter lines is easy. Its a great unit for the homeowner, reducing 11 bags of leaves to just one bag of mulch, ready for use in flower beds and vegetable gardens. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste |

Here is what people are saying about the Flowtron LE-900 Leaf Eater - The Ultimate Mulcher

| Simple to use and long lasting! Just make certain the leaves do not cover the motor on the bottom. It can be cleaned out but does put a delay in your day. Love being able to have finely chopped leaves for my compost pile. Speeds up the composting process and we are not contributing good material to a landfill. Wish all my neighbors used one. |

"Compromises for Shipping" | 2009-11-18 |

I really wanted to give this item a great review. Here are the plusses:
1. More powerful than other reviews credit: I was able to fine shred dry and damp leaves without the two-step recommended process.
2. Very satisfied with all other aspects of this machine-- works as advertised-- don't expect it to shred anything other than leaves, but it's more than equal to that task.
Negatives:
1. Flowtron has broken the system into various parts in order to minimize shipping costs. Assembly of these broken-down parts is frustrating. Components of the funnel do not fit that well when you assemble them.
2. The stand fell apart on me shortly after starting work this Fall. Flowtron provides it to you in two pieces which you must join with a plastic ligature assembly in the middle. The ligature assembly fails under minimal stress so I was faced with the choice of working with a wobbly machine on the verge of collapse or stopping and reassebling Flowtron's rickety stand design. My solution is to insert and screw in a dowell into the two stand tubes. I wish I could have had the option of paying more for shipping a solid system rather than spending time and money fixing things that were compromised for shipping purposes. |

| I purchased this item from sams club with free shipping. After reading the reviews I was prepared for failure and frustration. Im very glad I don't have to tote around that dang leaf vaccum anymore. I have a corner lot with maple's all around me. I have more leaves than the owners of the trees.......After some tedious 20minutes of strugglingto put it together, quickly I decided I would forgive the machine for all the frustration it had caused me. I would buy it all over again and maybe will give a couple out for gifts this year. |

"Very happy with this shredder" | 2009-11-15 |

I have finally used the leaf shredder. I have huge trees with mostly oak and tulip trees. The leaves were very dry so they shredded with ease. I used a trash can with a plastic bag in it. This arrangement was the easiest to use. I have not used this on wet leaves yet but will have a chance this weekend.
I also found that it handled small twigs fine. The string replacement was also very easy. I am very happy so far with this product.

"Cover your ears and shred those leaves" | 2009-11-12 |

We have a large yard, and even after removing several trees this summer our leaf cleanup is an enormous chore. Early in our six years here, we thought this machine (bought as a Craftsman, but essentially the same unit) would help us:
Troy-Bilt CS 4325 250cc Briggs & Stratton 1150 Series Gas Powered 2-Way Feed Chipper Shredder #24A-424E766
Well, it's heavy, bulky, a bear to start and it has to be stopped whenever the bag fills or the cutting teeth jam, which is often. We haven't pulled it out of the shed since 2005, because it's that much of a pain to use.
After filling 35 paper bags for pick-up, we looked at each other yesterday and said, "Enough is enough." Amazon delivered the Flowtron LE-900 today (thank you, Amazon Prime!).
Assembly was fairly simple--mating the two halves of the black leaf funnel, joining it to the shredding barrel, and clamping together two tubular steel parts to form the stand. All was done with a single tool--a Philips screwdriver. The manufacturer could have been clearer with assembly instructions, especially because there are three different screws of similar size.
Some products are single-purpose items: this is one of them. The LE-900 is designed to shred leaves, and it excels at that task. Unlike the chipper-shredder, this machine will not handle twigs or sticks, but then again, neither will your string trimmer.
I used leaf scoops to feed the hopper.
Midwest Quality Glove 45TA Lawn Claws Leaf Scoops
Using the scoops to "shuffle" the leaves into the feeder seems to be the most effective way to get them into the shredding chamber. The dual strings (a total of four cutting strings, about six inches long apiece) make quick work of the leaves. A variable-width opening keeps larger pieces in the shredding chamber until they are the desired shred size.
Leaves are designed by nature to occupy a lot of volume for their mass. Shredding them destroys the structure, and thus reduces the volume they occupy. It took me about 90 minutes to reduce a pile of leaves 10 feet by 5 feet by 3 feet high to a four-inch mulch layer for our flower beds.
CONSIDERATIONS:
--This machine is noisy. While it may seem quiet compared with a gasoline-powered lawn appliance, it still demands ear protection.
--This machine generates a lot of dust. Most of the mulch is about an inch in diameter depending on your settings, but finer dust (not to mention the dirt on the leaves) will fly in the air, covering your clothing and getting into your nose. I'd suggest a dust mask, and you might also consider eye protection.
--This machine is designed for leaves, grass, and pine needles. You should not expect to put other materials into it. A quarter-inch twig will be enough to slow down shredding. Thankfully, it's easy to switch off the machine and clear it.
--This machine stores easily. The stand is designed so that the entire barrel can be rotated downward and store in the space the stand alone occupies. It is lightweight, and fits easily on top of a trash barrel. A bungee around the bottom is designed to hold plastic leaf bags in stand-alone mode, though I did not try this feature.
I shredded 300 gallons of leaves in my first session with the LE-900. We decided on the spot that we are no longer going to fill paper bags and give our mulch to the town pick-up! |

This product works very well. I just have to pick out the large sticks and rocks (common sense!) - but one of the best purchases I have
made for the yard. This will reduce mulch time for leaves by a year.
