I'm not an audiophile by any stretch so I can't comment on sound quality in any meaningful way.
That said, these little 'phone are really good and live up to Sony's reputation for high quality. I've had these for 3 years now and they are still in great condition. I even left them in my jeans pocket and they survived the washing machine.
These earphones come with a 3 or 4 different rubber ear buds so that help me get the fit just right. Super comfortable and secure. Also, the cord is a good length to let you thread it through you clothes in different ways to conceal it.
In summary: I got these for around $30, if you can get it at that price point then go for it. |

"No more suffering with OEM iPod phones" | 2009-06-14 |

I'm one of the many that could never get the Apple-supplied headphones to stay in my ears, so I never got full sound or decent bass, let alone comfort. Was a little unsure how the "in-ear" design would feel, but after several months of use, I'm a believer.
The included medium rubber covers were perfect for my ears and have never fallen off. Includes extra sizes to custom fit to your ears. Easy to put the phones on and they stay in place through sweat and physical activity. Mine included an ingeniously designed case that keeps everything neatly out of the way for storage, plus a small box that will just protect the buds themselves if you like to wrap the phones around your iPod after use. You'll notice that with the ear clips it's a little hard to get these phones to wrap flat around anything, so the cases come in handy.
Sound is great, though a little on the booming bass side. Had to adjust EQ to turn bass down from what I was used to. To my ears, these still sound much better than the Apple originals, even when I held those in place for the best sound.
Wires are thin and probably won't hold up to a lot of hard yanking or kinking, but that's pretty much the standard these days. Wish the white version had been in stock to keep that iPod look, but a small price to pay for comfort and great sound. |

"Great sound; so-so design" | 2009-04-23 |

I've tried out about 10 different sets of Sony headphones, as well as a few from Sennheiser, and finally settled on these for my gym headphones. The sound is fantastic for the price range with enough bass to satisfy me while maintaining clear highs and vocals. I did try out a few higher-end buds, but although they provided better sound, the neck-chain cord was a deal-breaker. I can't stress how much I dislike this design. For one thing, I wear my iPod on my right hip since I'm right-handed, so the cord has to cross my body. So much for moving the cord to one side! And aside from that, the best placement for a cord when you're working out is right in the center (sure it's out of the way when I do my right-sided exercises, but it's directly in the way when I do my left-sided exercises). I really wish Sony would offer it's high-end earphones with a choice of either neck-chain or Y-type cord.
Now, I must mention that the MDR-EX81's also have a neck-chain cord, but it's a compromise I've had to make since the sound on all models with a Y-type cord is unacceptable to me. Fortunately, the cord on the MDR-EX81 doesn't bother me as much because of the over-the-ear design. This helps eliminate the pull of the cord on the earbud, which makes quite a bit of difference. Unfortunately, the over-the-ear design is not adjustable and is obviously made for someone with huge ears, so it's a very poor fit for me. But the earbuds remain fairly snug throughout my workout, so it's not a deal-breaker. Oh, and one more thing - I absolutely love the case, which keeps the cord from getting tangled in my gym bag. Overall, I give these headphones 4 stars with one star off for poor design.

"Second pair of defective MDREX81LP headphones - Thanks SONY!" | 2009-04-16 |

There are two good reasons NOT to buy these headphones: 1) they may very well fail without cause, as two pairs I've own have failed; and 2) SONY is so contemptuous of their customers that they offer to replace your defective $30 headphones with a `reconditioned' pair for $25. What a deal!
Do yourself a favor before buying: consider my experience with SONY repair. I mailed in my bum buds - the second pair that failed - but I objected to SONY's pricing. Surely they have a better deal to offer? Nope. SONY shipped back my buds complete with torn packaging and internal routing crap. Oh - and they invited me to get back to them: "It would be our pleasure to accept a major credit card."
I bet: $25 for used headphones with no cut to the retail middleman. This is SONY standing behind its product. "You're on your own, sucker." |
