"Great Printer!" | 2009-04-12 |

This is a GREAT little printer. I have had absolutely no issues with it. So far I have printed just over 12,000 pages (there is a little counter on it) and this thing is still running smoothly. I am about to have to replace my drum, which is a little expensive, but a cost incurred by any laser printer.
I calculated the cost per page and right now I am at about 4.5 cents. That is about 1/2 the cost of printing on campus on their professional laser printers. (I calculated CPP by taking cost of printer + # of toners I've used * price of new toner / total pages printed.) The price is only going to get cheaper the more I print.
Also, it is really easy to print duplex on this thing. While it doesnt have a duplexer like some other models do, you only have to print the even pages first, throw it back in and print the odd pages. Note: there is a brother model w/ a duplexer and 2nd paper tray for about $40 more. If the price difference was so nominal when I bought this printer I probably would have gone for the other printer instead. The other one also has network capabilities (though I have mine hooked up to an airport extreme through USB for printer sharing, which works perfectly. You just can't use the scanner).
I would recommend buying an extra toner at the outset to have on hand as the warning that toner is running low does not give you much time before it cuts out (i have yet to try the tape trick). If you buy an extra toner ahead of time from amazon you will save a bunch of money and will have the toner ready to go when it needs to be replaced. Then, when you replace the toner, go ahead and order the next one from amazon so it's ready to go.
The copier is a little slow if you are trying to copy a lot of pages from a book, etc. however, I do not copy all that much (maybe 200 pages out of 12,000), so it's not a big hassle, and if you have a stack of loose leaf paper the auto-feeder works great. It will not collate your copies (lets say you want to make 3 copies, it will copy page one 3 times, then page 2 3 times, etc.) which is a hassle, but I just do one copy at a time and then send it back through. Again, I don't copy enough for it to be a big deal. |

| I teach adult education classes, and bought this product to print out and make class set copies of my lessons. I've had it for over a year and it has worked fine without a glitch (knock on wood). I had one paper jam that took some creative enterprise to fix, but I did fix it and have had no other jams or problems. It is the convenience of having a work-style copier and printer at home. I like the laser-fast printing speed, and the quality of my printed documents. I haven't used it to scan anything yet, but for the copying and printing functions that I use heavily, I have no complaints. The toner cartridge that came with it lasted a long time. I miss the ability to print color copies on it, but for the price of color cartridges, I am willing to live without that feature. |

"NOT for envelope printing" | 2009-02-02 |

Overall this all-in-one does a decent job, but one of the items I NEED a printer to do is print envelopes, and sadly this printer just can't do a decent job on envelopes. Most of the envelopes I've tried to print come out crooked, and many have ghost images (duplicate images slightly offset from the main image). This happened to 4 out of 5 envelopes I've tried to print, and nothing I do seems to fix the problem.
If you don't need to print envelopes, this printer seems adequate. If envelope printing is important, just stay away from this printer. |

| I regret buying this printer. The main, persistently annoying problem is the odd place that Brother has placed the "output" tray. Check out the photo: It's the higher of the two slits on the front. Even with the scanner tray up, there's very little room for printouts to occupy. So for documents longer than 30 pages (or if you have some pages sitting in your output tray already) the printer begins to push them out of the tray and onto the floor (or all over the room). This also leads to frequent jams (sometimes the paper can't push its way out.) Reason enough to go another route. |

I chose this for the price, mainly, and there are some things that you have to deal with in exchange for its low cost. First, when you print multiple pages, they get gummed up in a hurry (less than 10 pages will do it) and your document comes out in a mangled mess on the floor. You therefore have to be present for each print job and take each page out as it comes. Also, I have a Mac and had some serious confusion on how to get it to scan and to where on the computer the file arrived. Customer support was friendly (but a long, long wait for Mac customers) and got the problem solved.
All in all, it's solid, but with shortcomings. |
