Here is what people are saying about the The Nazi Officer's Wife : How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust
5 Star Rating  "Fascinating book"2009-09-25

This book is one of my all time favorites. It was hard to put down. Her writing is vivid, real, and makes you feel as if you are there with her. I have read it twice. Her experience was different from many who suffered in the camps during this time. She had to be witty, prepared at all times, and every day lived with the fear of being found out. She includes lots of photographs from that time period. I would have a hard time letting this book go. I highly recommend this book for anyone. You won't be bored!

5 Star Rating  "Edith Beer; A Remarkable Lady"2009-07-09
- Reviewed By User: A2SY8L8EYJEEOA
Edith Beer was a remarkable lady; extremely bright, educated, kind, honest, and had an amazing amount of common sense. Edith told her story only to be able to leave her daughter the legacy of her own survival during the holocaust; otherwise, Edith had no incentive to describe her experiences during World War II.

She portrayed her life in great detail in Vienna, forced labor camp, Germany during the Reich, and Germany during the Russian occupation after the war. Besides her experiences, we know her thoughts as she explains what is happening to her and how she existed. It is remarkable that she went through her experiences alone, with tremendous fear, without someone with whom to confide and take care of her.

In Vienna, Edith went to university to become a lawyer. She was denied her last exam because she was Jewish. (The Aunshloss between Austria and Germany had taken place; Jewish people were denied their basic rights, put into ghettos, and were being deported to the east.) She was deported to a slave labor camp in Poland; made to work long hours with little food and still remained a lady with good conscience.

The title of this book, "The Nazi Officer's Wife" says a lot about Edith's strength of character. She had been allowed to leave Poland to visit her mother in Vienna. Once there, she realized her mother had been deported to "the east" and her own life was in danger. With the help of close friends and forged documents she smuggled herself into Germany and became an Aryan. She met a Nazi officer who fell in love with her. She was honest and told him she was Jewish...the man did not care, and he became her husband and portector. However, there were always issues of the secret being found out which terrified her.

Edith had a daughter, helped her husband escape Siberia while working as an attorney for the Russians in East Germany, and helped her husband's aunt monetarily, who had always been good to her. Upon returning to the Russian bloc, Werner Vetter divorced his wife, and Edith managed an escape to London with her daughter.

Angela has the answers to her mother's World War II memories. I feel at a disadvantage. I was very tuned in to every one of Edith's experiences and thoughts. I felt close to her and would have loved to have had a conversation with her.

I'm sure there will be critics out there who will question some of the motives and actions of Edith Beer. However, unless someone has actually been in the holocaust, and had the very same experiences, who can judge someone else's actions? I for one, was delighted to read that in London, Edith had the good fortume to meet and marry a Jewish man from Vienna. They both deserved peace and a comfortable life together.

5 Star Rating  "A fascinating and harrowing tale of survival."2009-06-23

This is a fascinating and harrowing account of one woman's efforts to survive in a world that had become a nightmare. It is impossible and unfair to judge the extreme choices that Edith Hahn Beer made in order to survive in a world that had turned upside down. This book is an important and awesome description of the lengths to which people were forced to go to survive the Nazi regime, and an uplifting testament to the fact that there were people who were wiling to put their own lives in danger to save their own and our humanity.

4 Star Rating  "Unique Story"2009-06-06

I thought I had exhausted the types of situations people found themselves in trying to survive the Holocaust. I was wrong.
Edith Hahn has a unique tale to tell of suffering, courage, and downright luck, if one who loses so much yet survives, can be called lucky.
There is a harrowing scene in this book where Ms Beer is searching for her mother in France, and is excoriated by concentration camp survivors for the choice she made to marry a Nazi.
This is a heartfelt book that will haunt you.

This book will remain in my mind and heart forever. The author's story was compelling, but the writing style and candor is what set this book part. I could 'see' through the author's eyes and into her heart. I could not put this book down. This book should be required reading for every history class.

As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, I have encountered a variety of people with different accounts, this one is by far the most unique and has provoked new thoughts about the subject.
