Billy Graham?

Well, what do you expect coming out of the mouth of a christian evangelist? And anyway, it's the truth! The gospel truth!!!

I read this many moons ago, yet recommend this because in my critical eyes, he has remained the sort of christian that I understood as a child that Christ wanted me to become. A sinner, yes, like everyone else, like Billy Graham?, yes, but so in tune with his Savior that one cannot see his flaws.

An article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution recently was about the Graham's wishes for their burial site in North Carolina. There was a picture of Ruth Bell Graham, bed-ridden with her family surrounding her. I had known she had been ill for some time, but was taken aback by the sight. He and Ruth have weathered many storms, met many people worldwide, have led interesting lives. Reading his autobiography will help you relive his long journey.

Unless Billy did a fantastic job in hiding all of the difficult and trying times of his life (as I suspect in the case of his troubled relationship with his son Franklin), WHAT A LIFE this man had!!! Who would not want to have what he had: travels; meetings with the rich, the famous, the wise; success; financial stability; a loving wife; great kids; and most of all, the honor and privilege to lead millions to Christ. Can you imagine the party they'll throw in heaven when he gets there? However, the book was very mediocre in my view. Very seldom the author opened his heart and expressed his true feelings...Lots of anecdotes, details, insignificant (to the reader) stuff; it was not a total waste of time, because you always get the feeling that this man loves his Lord and truly wants to serve Him. Not much to say against that...I just wish he could have made deeper remarks about people and events in general.

Let me first preface this by saying that I've never actually heard a Billy Graham message but was curious to learn about him given his wide influence both in the religious and political realm. It's obvious why he is so popular he has a great sense of humor and a way of telling storys that while amazingly simple does not insult the intellegience of the listner. Also the fact that his life was good material to work with didn't hurt at all. He's a fascinating character while on one hand he is a throw back to the old school evangelists like Billy Sunday who preached with exuberant energy and strength against the evils of such things as alcohol and secularism but on the other hand he hurdled christianity into the future in the way he worked with several different church denominations and revolutionized evangelism through mass media a feat that has never been equaled sense. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Billy Graham is how such an immedeatly plain spoken individual made such headway with the secular media and goverment heirarchy this is something Billy Graham himself admits belwilderment to on the back cover of the book. His popularity would explain somewhat his influence in government it's clear that politicians thought and rightfully so that his views represented those of a lot of Americans. However there is never really any explanation as to why or how for example he became the first minister to speak at the London School of Business he himself admitted that he wasn't the most intellectual of his peers. Perhaps it is as Billy Graham claims the power of the gospel.
A couple of the things I admired were Billy Grahams honesty when it came to dealing with such things as money and women. I also personally liked the fact that he didn't try to pretend he was more pompous than he really was he's open about experiences that some ministers would no doubt be embarassed by such as going to movies with a lot of nudity at young age, being hit on by a girl in high school, and acting like a bumbling fool around presidents Truman and Eisenhower. As some people on here have alluded to already it does sort of seem like he was an absintee father. I was a bit disturbed by this as a Christian I think God calls married men to be husbands and fathers first and foremost. I have to admit though I think a lesser man wouldn't have disclosed such details as his young daughter not being able to recognize her mother.

This book was a "Masterpiece" of a book and I enjoyed every bit of it. I could clearly see that God uses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise for his glory. It will inspire and strenghten your faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This long but well-written book takes you through the life of Billy Graham. I couldn't put it down and read it over about 2 weeks despite its length (700 plus pages!!). Some reviewers say he is arrogant for "dropping important names" so frequently. But these are just the plain and simple facts. Billy Graham had incredible opportunities to preach all over the world and met many important world leaders and figures. He was (and is) highly respected by just about everyone, and has managed to remain a humble and simple-living man. He doesn't hesitate in the book to admit when he made a mistake in judgment or should have handled a situation differently. He and his main ministry assistants kept very high standards of accountability among themselves. Much of the book focuses on his crusade ministry and world travels. But in the final chapters of the book, he does get more personal and mentions some of the problems and challenges there were for his family because he traveled so much of the time. Long but worth the read!

I am glad this book was chosen for our book club, because I probably would not have chosen to purchase it on my own.

Billy Graham is a man that can truly be judged by the "fruit" in his Christian Life. There may be critics out there, of course, but his fruit shows that he is a man that loves God with all his heart.

I have heard Billy speak in person, as well as two of his other children. From the book, it was very interesting to learn more about the "woman behind the man". Ruth Graham, our book club decided was one AMAZING woman, and such an integral part of what has made Billy who he is in life. She raised wonderful children, and now has even grandchildren speaking out for Christ in Stadiums.

The thing that was the most impressive about Billy's life, and continues to be, is how he is sought out from Presidents and Leader's throughout the world for his prayers, advice, and encouragement. This alone says very much about the man. I would encourage you to read this book for that information alone, as it is very telling, and interesting. I hope to see Billy at a crusade again, but take MY children with me this time, like my grandparents took me when i was young.

Billy Graham is an amazing man of God. He fulfilled God's calling, and finished the race marked out for him for over 50 years.
In this phenomenal autobiography, Just As I am; Billy Graham presents us with a detailed, introspective and humorous account of his life and his various encounters with people of high positions. Whether its Kim Il Sung, Muhammad Ali or the many others mentioned; it simply shows how great God is and the amount of influence that he can give to one man was chosen by God.
His ministeries/Crusades are not only inspiring, but mindblowing that leaves your jawdropping after you have read about all of it. I remember shaking my head and smiling in amazement as I read about the number of people who received Christ, and simply the massiveness of the audiences he preached to. I mean, come on. We all have to admit that it is simply God's divine will that one man could speak to 1 million Koreans at once,or to an eager 250 000 crowd in Central Park. In addition, Billy Graham's TV appearances, Newspaper interviews, and Evangilistical Association speaks volumes on his favor and access to the spheres of Media influence.
To onclude, this biography can only spur us on in our life for God. After reading this, I just have this passion to reach out to others and preach the gospel as much as I can. If you are a Christian who lacks that zeal and passion for Christ, then, I hope this would ultimately spur you on to reach greater heights for God.
God can use anyone, and that means that God can use you!

"The Harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
