Here is what people are saying about the Buddha (Penguin Lives)

The best book about Buddha I have read. Karem Armstrong write with passion and intellectuality and at the same time very simple to understand her subject of study.

There is so little actually "known" about the Buddha's life. It so good to read Karen Armstrong who keeps the biography on the earth as her "witness." This is a needed and worthwhile biography. Thank you Dr. Armstrong.

Well written, novelized biography. Ms. Armstrong does a good job of avoiding much of the early legend that turns many modern readers off. She has researched the Suttas well (chronology of the events of Gotama's early life are not easily determinable from the early writings)to come up with a chronology of events that make for a good story, even if one is unable to know, for sure, if it is entirely accurate, or not.

Karen Armstrong presents a short biography of Siddhatta Gotama or the Buddha, attempting to place him within his historical, philosophical and psychological context. While this work would not be out of place on any scholar's shelves, it is pleasantly readable and serves up thought-provoking comparisons to other religious and spiritual figures.

She justly notes the difficulties of writing about a man who transcended self to became an archetype and who tried to suppress any hint of personality cult. I admire the scholar's mind that drives her to peel down the mythology surrounding the Buddha. The trouble is this is like peeling an onion: one gets to the center and one has nothing. Buddha would surely approve the author's remote focus on the sermons and the followers. I certainly recommend this to anyone interested in the history of philosophy or anyone interested in a brief overview of the Buddha's life. I commend especially the author's account of the Buddha's later years and death, for there she seems to allow her imagination a little room to work. Oddly enough, I think to approach Buddha as a human being requires a novelist like Herman Hesse or Deepak Chopra. A more imaginative approach that leaves some of the myth in place seems to bring the man behind it partly in focus.

4 Star Rating  "A Good Short Biography"2009-02-02
- Reviewed By willjerom
This is a short, compact read on the life of the Buddha by a scholar of excellent reputation. Armstrong has lived up to that reputation here by delivering another quality work of scholarship that is more accessible to the reader than some of her other writings. If you are interested in a short overview of the facts and mythologies built up around the life of Siddatta Gotama - the historical Buddha - then Armstrong's work should be a quick and rewarding read. There are not too many substantiated facts about the Buddha, but Armstrong has done a skillful job weaving an engaging story around the reports that do exist.

This book reads like a very compelling story, yet has profound depth. Karen Armstrong brings the ancient times to life in her scholarly way and conveys her gift of getting the bigger picture. I read it in little increments only because I wanted to savor the profound wisdom and information pouring from each chapter's pages. There is much information one will not want to miss.. as it all seems is so important in helping the reader to absorb the magnitude of what the Buddha accomplished for mankind. A truly worthwhile read. I've already handed many copies out as gifts.
