It is a bit unbelievable that she should have it all- sultry voice, gentle lyrics, playful melodies. While the content theme can be diversified a bit more, the album is definitely full of personality, like the mystery of the artist herself.

| I have read some of the other reviews and I am appalled. Someone is fixated on the fact she used to be a model. Another one compares her to Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan... Obviously, these people do not speak French. Because if they did they would realize that Bruni's lyrics (mostly written by her) are fantastic. And this is what really matters here, not her looks. These poetic songs are also very well interpreted: Bruni's soft voice matches the lyrics, she makes them come to life. It is songwriting at its best. If you speak or understand French, you won't be disappointed. |

"The First Lady of French Chanson : A Luminous Masterpiece" | 2008-01-23 |

Whether or not Carla Bruni remains of political interest, chances are you have probably heard her name before. This, her debut album, recorded when she was in her mid-30s, is the French Equivalent of Norah Jones "Come Away With Me". In fact, that Norah Jones connection will haunt you through this recording, as both in song choice and delivery, Bruni is one of those rare animals that get better with repeated listening.
The title song, "Quelqu'un m'a dit" is easily the best thing here. No opening strums, no grand instrumentation - just a womans' husky voice and a guitar set the mood perfectly. This is the ultimate 'wine' album. Listening to the new Vanessa Paradis record, I was reminded that very few French language singers (perhaps for the exception of Charlotte Gainsbourg, and to an extent, Keren Ann) choose to use one genre of music on their albums and conform to it. Bruni is definitely one for this, as her albums' songs all have a 'sameness' to them. This does not mean that they all sound the same - rather, the tempo and musical genre is the same throughout - and this is a good thing.
My personal favorite is the underrated "Le Toi Du Moi", a beautiful song whose word play reminded me very strongly of Jeanne Moreau's "La Tourbillon de la Vie". This track is maddeningly addictive and achingly beautiful, and if you do decide to get this album, I can guarantee that you will be playing this song for years to come.
The tempo only really changes towards the end of the album on one track - "L'Excessive", where they go for a more jazzy, bluesy feel combined with a beat that is definitely more sprightly than anything else here. The inspired closer "The Last Minute" is exactly a minute long - and works great in this context.
Perhaps knowing more about Carla Bruni might affect your purchase decision. Like Milla Jovovich, this is a former supermodel (Guess, Oscar De La Renta, Christian Dior) who was amongst the Top 10 highest paid supermodels in the world, in the 1990s. She has two albums out at the time of writing. This one, and her 2007 release entitled "No Promises" (an interesting but ultimately flawed collection of old-English poems set to blues-jazz). I would suggest getting this one first and discovering a new and exciting world artist.
Many viewers on this page reach here due to their recent discovering of Miss Bruni through her involvement with French President Nic Sarkozy. Its great that this album is at least getting some attention all the years after its' release, because its a fantastic slice of French chanson, and a stellar five star album in every sense of the term. This, along with "Divinidylle" by Vanessa Paradis, should be your essential French language music purchases for this year.
Highly Recommended. |

| I once read an article by a music critic who wrote, that she had used this album numerous times as a gift, as she had experienced that carla bruni's music was popular with very different people. I couldn't agree more. Whenever I play this album people ask about it, and whenever I give to someone, they return and say that they love it. The music is soft and Bruni's voice is warm and present. The french lyrics make you fell a little like sitting in a cosy french cafe with a croissant and a hot cup of coffee :) |

"I honestly liked it" | 2007-11-27 |

I had never heard about Carla Bruni before I saw the movie "Conversation with other women", where they play the song giving the name to this disc, but I liked it. I three of the other reviews (as they were kind of low in my opinion), and although I must say some of their arguments seemed correct, I don't see how bad it is.
They are right in the sence that it's very uniform, meaning, the rythms change very little from one song to the next, and it's probably not the most original work I have heard. But on the other hand, it's really different from what I hear most of the time, it's refreshing, and I really liked her voice.
I tend to rate, in my opinion, a bit hard. I would give it four and a half stars if I could. I generally rate with 5 only those things that I consider really magistral, so, I wouldn't rate this with 5, but in my opinion, it's good, really worth the price. |

"Don't hate her because she's beautiful.." | 2007-11-14 |

Really, now. Who'd have thunk a super model could sing?
But shockingly this is a super album. Have you seen Casablanca? The scenes in Rick's where the French chanteuse (Corinna Mura) sits on the high stool in the spot light with only a guitar and laconically lays it on the crowd? And then passionately belts La Marseillaise out for the delectation of the SS? That's who Mlle. Bruni reminds me of. Not because Corinne & Carla sound particularly alike, mais parce qu'elles sont toutes deux filles francaises avec guitares, rien d'autre, each laying it down atmospheric. No flipping of the proverbial bird at goose stepping fascists, here, tant pis.. but Miss Bruni would if she could.. I feel it in my marrow, cartilage flowing flush..
Ahem.. ah, Well, I cannot of course gainsay those here who dislike this album, or who else damn it with faint praise.. De gustibus non disputandem est, afterall. Some complain some of her songs sound too alike. Mais apres on boit quelques verres.. mixed with some (say) Keren Ann (who is just as fantastique as all the others here say,) Trenet, Gainsbourg, Piath, Comme d'habitude, and as Frank would likely say, it all just swings, baby.
As for the songs: the title "Quelqu'un M'a Dit" is exquisite. But "Le Toi Du Moi" is as fantastic. I was driving lost for several hours on service roads in Pike National Forest in the Colorado Rockies the other day, fording streams, inhaling clouds of red dust, all the while grooving to her repeatedly. Nigh perfect ironic symbiosis of song and setting. Check these lyrics: "Tu es l'envie et moi le geste.. Toi le citron et moi le zeste.. Je suis le the, tu es la tasse.. Toi la guitare et moi la basse.. Tu es la Belle et moi la Bete.. Tu es le corps et moi la tete.. Tu es le corps.. Yumm!"
Just very good stuff. Stands up (plug your inquisitorial ears: heresy floweth here freely) to Edith's lyrics any day.. Okay, okay.. well, maybe, not.. (I recant.. I recant.. le vin doth confuseth..)
Any which way, let me conclude suggesting you check out another super-model songstress, Milla Jovovich, whose album "The Divine Comedy" is also well worth your time. |

"The words, the mood. Fantastic!" | 2007-07-17 |

None of the reviews have mentioned the words. I speak a little french but not enough so I googled the lyrics in french, and then copied them to babelfish and had them translated. THEY'RE SO GREAT! They're very smart and the philosophy is deep... really, they're not about how sad love is at all. If anything they're very playful and mischevious. Je suis le plus beau she sings that she's the handsomest man in the neighborhood and all the women swoon for her, so do their husbands. In J'en Connais she talks about how her poor mama throws up her hands and says What have I done wrong. In Le Derniere Minute she sings, in one minute, how on her death bed she'll be pleading with death for one last minute...
The thing that makes her unique is how she sets a mood. It's very different from Sade or Nora Jones. Like them, Her delivery and melodies are very intimate, as if she's singing in your ear. But what makes her sexy isn't fake sighs and the whimpers,it's the playful teasing tone. Like you're laying in bed with her, she tells you little fantasies and makes little murmuring jokes... What a sexy mood!
I'm besotted with her right now.

Great sound. I really like Carla Bruni's sensuous, natural voice. Perhaps a bit disappointing that there's only 37 mins. of music on this CD.
