It's been said - THE sentinel work by one of the great masters of science fiction, and will be forever an enduring classic, of any genre. It's unfortunate it was so abused by Hollywood, but perhaps there really will be a fitting movie made someday....
And yes, forget the sequels.... |

| Quite possibly the greatest book I've ever read! I absolutely loved it and can't get enough of Dune now. I've already ripped through Dune Messiah (which I enjoyed just as much) and I'm half way through Children of Dune. I'm loving Dune.... |

Ok, the only negative aspect from the item could be the cover. It was a little bit folded, not too much, and rather than amazon I guess it was because of the shippment enterprise, I mean, I think it's quite difficult to preserve under perfect conditions the book if it is paperback book.
Anyway, the book was ok and quite cheap, I think I made a good buy. I gonna continue buying by amazon without any doubt. |

| Previously I had panned the Kindle Edition for bad formatting! (And believe me, that DOES take away the enjoyment of a book, no matter the content -- especially if you'd read it before, like I have, in paperback.) But apparently Amazon and the publisher listened, and have now fixed it. Yeah! So I am now raising my review from 1 star to 4 stars. (Anyone know how to make the Amazon system accept that? It won't let me change the star rating now!) Anyway, why 4? While pretty good, it's still pretty dated in regards to concepts, story line, and characters, and all that mystical mumbo-jumbo almost puts it into a half-fantasy/half-science fiction genre. But still, pretty good. I'd recommend it, and the two books that follow it in the series (Children of Dune and Dune Messiah.) I would NOT recommend any of the prequels that his son has put out, or the books that come after Dune Messiah. F.H. pretty much took the concepts as far as they could go with a coherent storyline, and the son is not the father. But that's just my humble opinion. :) |

The making of a man and the future of a planet are intertwined in this Science Fiction classic. Paul Atreides is the heir to his Father's Dukedom on th Planet Arrakis. The planet is the key to intergalatic commerece because of its large supply of spice. As Paul completes the rite of passage from child to man a new generation make their mark and it all begins in Dune.
Rarely, does a story capture me from the beginning like Herbert does here. The characters leave an indelible mark on the reader and move the story at a brisk pace. This is not an average sci-fi story. It has many levels of religious, political and ecological overtones that still hold significant meaning in today' world. I highly reccomend this brilliant Hugo and Nebula Award winning novel.

| Frank Herbert created simply the most brilliant piece of science fiction/fantasy ever written. Arrakis is to me what Middle Earth is to others. If you're debating whether or not you want to purchase a copy,you should stop debating and buy it ASAP. If you're even remotely a science fiction/fantasy fan then you will love it and most likely go on to read the entire amazing series.(Just wait till you get to God Emperor of Dune!It will blow you away!) Once maybe every generation we're blessed with a writer with an incredible imagination like Tolkien or JK Rowling and Frank Herbert is such a giant. Forget about the awful movie made by that hack David Lynch, do yourself a favor and read this book! |
