I bought my Dyson when they first came out.. maybe 5 or 6 years ago.. I forget. We got the basic yellow no-frills model. At the time there were not telescoping models or ball models. There was a animal model, but it seemed to be the same except for the mini turbine that you could actually buy cheaper than the difference in vacuum model prices. We brought it home and vacuumed up after our dog, our two cats and 3 kids that have lived with us. I use it all the time, and my husband uses it for everything.. all our floors, the couches, the drapes, the blinds, dusting, the car.. everything. We just empty the canister when it gets full and rinse the one filter they tell you to rinse every 6 months, and it works today like it did back then.
I think it is very well constructed, with very durable plastic. We are a military family, and have moved 3 times since getting it, and it's banged around, been packed and unpacked, taken to friends houses when they moved, survived all my family put it through and still just works. We finally got around to buying the little mini-turbine head this past month on ebay, and that is my only complaint. I wish we'd bought that thing long ago when we got the vacuum. It's amazingly handy for stairs, furniture, our cars, and even little throw rugs. You know how you have to like step on one end so the vacuum doesn't suck them up? Not any more!
Yes, it was expensive. But we used to buy vacuums every 6 months or every year, depending on quality. For not much less we've bought and killed Eureka's, Hoovers, Panasonics, Dirt Devils, and a few I forget. If mine were to break (god forbid) I'd get it fixed, and if I couldn't I'd buy one tomorrow without hesitation. It is, bar none, the best vacuum cleaner in the universe, and I feel this way after 5 or 6 years of using it. That should say something. |

"Love it!" | 2010-03-08 |

| We have this model vacuum at work (a small office). When we first got it, I was also the cleaning lady and decided to test it out. I used our old vacuum first and then the Dyson. To my surprise, it picked up a lot that the other vacuum left behind. I liked this vacuum so much that I had my husband buy me the teal one for our home. Besides, Kim & Aggie always have a Dyson on How Clean Is Your House? I like that the drum opens at the bottom (my old one pulled out, and everything overflowed from the top onto my just-vacuumed floor). I like the different attachments. I use the flat one to get all those pesky dustmites off the bed. I only wish that it was a little lighter when carrying it upstairs. Of course, if my husband's around, I just have him do it for me! :) |

"So far so good, ratcheting noise is fixed" | 2010-03-07 |

This is my first review but I felt compelled to write to help others who might experience the ratcheting noise.
I don't know how many vacuums I've owned over the last 30 years but I've had almost every brand...Kirby (still have it, about 30 years old but too heavy), Hoover, Bissell, Kenmore, Dirt Devil...you name it, I probably had it. We do not have any pets and the kids are 17 and up. Not big dirt generators anymore. We vacuum every two weeks and occasionally in-between if necessary.
I bought the Dyson DC-14 3 days ago at a Kohl's that has a no questions return policy (mainly because I had a 30% off deal and the few negative reviews made me more cautious). Normally, I buy everything from Amazon. Anyway, set up was extremely easy and it worked great on our large area rug. Moved to the small, low pile area rug and immediately the vacuum complained with what we called a grinding noise. It also grinded on our indoor/outdoor carpeting in our laundry room (read very low pile carpet). It went away using the bare floor setting but we didn't think it sucked as well.
Before returning it, I decided to call their help line and even though I was on hold for 10 minutes, I'm very glad I did! As soon as I started talking, she knew exactly what the issue was, why it happens and how to fix it. They call it a ratcheting noise and it happens because the vacuum clamps down on the floor and causes the beater bar to hit the housing. I don't know if I explained that right but that's the basics. She walked me through a very simple procedure and the noise is gone.
We'll see how it performs long term but so far so good. The 5-year warranty was a big seller...if I can keep a vacuum for 5 years, I will be thrilled. And I was impressed with their customer service. I only chose 4 stars because a) I had to call the help line and b) I don't know how it will perform long-term. |

"Sooooo disappointed!" | 2010-02-21 |

| I am so disappointed. After hearing so many wonderful things about the Dyson, I broke down and bought a Dyson because my 1 year old has terrible asthma. Much to my dismay, it does not pick up pet hair on area rugs or persian rugs. When I put the Dyson on the "carpet" setting and vacuumed these certain areas, it made a horrible screaching sound that scared my son. When I put the it on the "hard floor" setting, there was no nose, but also no pet hair removal. Unfortunately, I will have to take it back :( |

"Great Customer Service Experience" | 2010-02-18 |

| I love Dyson. I bought this vacuum because I was tired of buying Hoover, Eureka, etc and having them break down after a year or two. I saw the five year warranty and that alone sold me on this machine. The vacuum had been working great, but until there is a problem, you never know how good a company is. Well, I had a problem with the vacuum and braced myself to call the hotline numbner. Good news, I got a real live person after a short wait. The person was knowledgeable AND cheerful. When it was determined I needed a repair, a work order was sent to an authorized service center within two minutes that was no more than a mile from my house and it will be repaired within twenty-four hours! I can't believe it. This is a stand up company. I am always buying Dyson. |

Okay, maybe it's me. Maybe I have high expectations. Maybe I am a harsh critic, but I will be honest with you: purchasing the Dyson DC14 was a waste of hard earned $$$. Simply put the Dyson is a clunky, awkward to maneuver, brick of a vacuum that doesn't do anything better or more special than your average, bagless Hoover. It's no easier to empty, doesn't suck up anything more than a Dirt Devil and doesn't filter much better either. The hose attachment is a royal headache to use. It requires trapeze artist coordination and a PHD in mechanical engineering to understand. Once you get the process down it will be second nature, but you will probably leave the dust bunnies to their own devices after you contemplate the work it will take to go after them. Trust me, let them be. It's Lego styling is an eyesore (which would mean nothing if it worked as well as the Dyson hype machine advertised). The price and the epic sounding verbage used to describe the DC14 (All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner) almost speak to you of mythical power and versatility. Well...the description isn't exactly a lie. The DC14 is a vacuum and it does suck so maybe it's moniker is more of an overstated, partial truth. To me it speaks more of great advertising and lets face it, I bought into it. I got sucked in by the hype, the commercials and the elegant black box on the shelf. I needed a vacuum and it spoke to me. It convinced me to spend nearly twice as much as I had intended to at the time. So hats of to Dyson, you got me. As an owner (and an admitted sucker) I feel it's my duty to give the Dyson a little perspective. So for all you prospective vacuum buyers out there, I probably won't talk you out of your impending purchase. Like most of you I read the glowing reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, but trust me here: the vast majority of positive reviews are by innocent people who have convinced themselves that the vacuum does all the epic things it claims to. I wouldn't blame them either. After spending over $300 for a vacuum cleaner I was tempted to convince everyone it's the best thing to ever suck crap up off the floor. But honestly, look at the price and then go look again at the other models on the market.
So in short here is my advice:
For all you undecided buyers, keep looking and comparing. Save yourself a couple dollar bills (and the inevitable regret that will come later).
For those who are gonna get one no matter what, don't worry you will convince yourself in time that the Dyson is something special after all.
In the end I can say in all honestly, the Dyson DC14 does suck hair up off the livingroom floor--so as a vacuum it gets a passing grade for doing that.
