I bought my P35 a year ago and have been pleasantly satisfied. Good quality, good vision, good performance. And excellent price ($900 at Sam's) when compared to other big, bold notebooks. The only drawback is the 10 pounds of hardware (which I knew when I bought it) makes for very difficult travel.

"Heres how to fix overheat problem" | 2006-10-02 |
| - Reviewed By User: A3DK69B569LTFN |
I bought this computer and had the shut down problems and the display went out in less than a year , toshiba fixed it then it did it again , and it was one week past warranty...
i found one solution to the overheat that works awesome , seeing as i stay logged on for at least 20 hours a day ..
i elevated the bottom with a product from tiger.com then i set a small personal fan next to it and directed it underneath the laptop , had to turn the fan upside down so all the air went under it and i dont run computer unless that fan is on and it works great that way ...
it really does work ... just remember to keep cool air flowing under at at back of it with a small fan on the right side of it and it wont shut down ...
also the overheat problem is due to the heat sink .

"IMHO ... Do NOT buy this product!" | 2006-07-22 |

To be fair, I loved the laptop ... when it worked. Its performance met all of my expectations and the 17" screen was a pleasure.
However, my machine began experiencing overheating shutdowns (and yes, I always had sufficient clearance under the machine for proper airflow into the cooling vents.) I took the machine in for warranty repair on 6/15/2006, one day before warranty expiration. As of today, 7/22/2006, it is still there waiting for a back-ordered CPU. TOSHIBA's customer service has been absolutely no help. During various, multiple and fruitless calls to TOSHIBA customer service, I was transferred from person to person like a hot potato and while on hold I was mysteriously disconnected ... 3 times! Never did I receive any useful information as to when I could expect the back-ordered part to arrive or did I ever sense that anyone actually cared about my plight and disappointment with their company.
Without elaborating since this review is specific to the laptop, I have since begun experiencing problems with the only other TOSHIBA product that I own. Either I am extremely unlucky, or there may be a pattern here.
I know not what course others may take, but as for me ... I will NEVER buy anything from TOSHIBA again!

"Hinges have bad design" | 2005-10-03 |

| The hinges holding the screen are weak by design. The screen is so big (awesome) and heavy that the hinges can give in after mild use. Although 17" is good and other things about this laptop are as people say, but you cannot be sure with the hinges. It is a costly repair (350 + 100 , P + L). I am not sure if other brands have the same problem. |

"Don't Buy One Of These, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . BUY TWO" | 2005-09-17 |

Last year I wrote that I have loved my Toshiba P25-S509 so much that after years of buying a new laptop every six months or less I was finally ready to settle down and raise a family -- well this P35 is our first child, and she's gorgeous!
She has her mother's eyes. That's right, SEVENTEEN (17) inches of sun bright display. Writing a research paper or thesis or working on a first novel? Learning spreadsheets, accounting or Quickbooks in B-school? Watching a DVD? Playing a multiplayer game via the internet? This is THE display and the computer! You see two pages of your word processor (MS Word, Wordperfect) document at the same time, side by side and a very wide view of your spreadsheets. Catch all the action in games without all the excessive scrolling around. Watch DVDs in genuine widescreen!
But her beauty goes far deeper than the superficial. BabyGirl is packing a double-layered 8X DVD writer -- Toshiba's SUPERDRIVE. There's also a 100 Gb hard-drive spinning inside there. Yes, one hundred giGGlebytes! ("gigabytes"). Top of the line 802.11 B/G integrated internal wireless plus ethernet gives you three highspeed network and internet connection options, whether hard-plugged in your dorm or small office, or roaming wireless at Starbucks, McDonalds, around the office or home or whereever! She's got CONNECTIONS alright, including Firewire for your high-end digital camcorders, as well as USB 2.0 for the middle of the road digital cameras, that's backward compatible to those crappy old low end model digital cameras. At birth, she was 9 pounds, eight ounces -- which means when you take her someplace you'll never get there and realize you need to have brought anything else! All those mobile computers who advertise how light they are will always leave you needing to pack along all the crucial stuff they had to leave out in order to shave of one or two pounds.
With this computer, I never need to pack along a CD or DVD or larger hard drive or PC card modem or PC card wireless. I just turn it on (or take it off hybernate) and I'm in business. And I'm certainly not out there squinting to see some tiny screen! I can snap a picture of someone at Starbucks and email it with a note: Dude; isn't that your honey holding hands with that other guy? Hey, it ain't gossip if you send photographic evidence! I can shoot a video clip of the action at the ballgame and quickly email it using the internal highspeed wireless in seconds. I can be chatting with video live on the net while I'm sitting in the airport.
Speaking of proprietary software, Toshiba somehow manages to give in excess of five hours of battery life with continuous use of DVD/CD and/or hard drive and the seventeen inch screen. Translation: YOU DON'T NEED TO CARRY ALONG AN EXTRA BATTERY like you do with every laptop that claims to weigh a pound or two less. With those "lightweights" once you add the extra battery, or two, the external DVD/CD and other essentials, they weigh more than this one AND yet they are inconvenient since you've got to unpack that stuff when you get someplace, then pack it up again.
On the other hand, with the P35, I pop it open at the airport while waiting at the gate, then just close it when it's time to board. Pop it open on the plane, then just close it up and deboard. Pop it open in the cab, then just close the lid when it's time to get out. Sitting in some office waiting room? Open it up and work -- or play -- then when you're called in for you appointment just close the lid.
BETTER STILL, the DVD/CD Superdrive is removable, so if you're on a 16 hour flight to Africa, you can have an extra battery already on board so you'll be able to use the computer the entire duration of the flight -- I'm allowing for the times when you fall asleep and the laptop automatically hybernates, depending on how you've set the controls. Eleven hours or more or laptop use on the two batteries plus a fair amount of snoring and drooling equals sixteen hours.
Did I tell you how SMART she is? She's a genius, with her 3.46Ghz Mobile P4 processor, 533 Mhz front side bus, 512 Mb SDRAM with 128 Mb shared VRAM (cnet.com erroneously says its not shared) 1 Mb cache, and Hyperthreading. Using their proprietary software, Toshiba produces more bang from shared VRAM than any other manufacturer does from independent.
I always buy the Toshiba extended warranty with damage protection, although I've never used it, just in case those superbrite extremely delicate and thoughtful TSA officers mishandle her or I trip over a curb or some other way there's a calamity.
With the double-layered DVD writer, backing up the 100 Gb hard-drive is fast and manageable, to the extent that I actually DO it.
I find it very easy to edit photos and even digital movies. The huge hard drive offers more than enough room for editing even very long movies, then just write them to a double-layered DVD when done.
Moreover, she's totally AFFORDABLE! Easily saves you a $1300 off the price you'd pay for any other laptop with a double-layed DVD writer, 100 Mb hard-drive, 17 inch display and 3.46 Ghz P4 CPU -- and that's IF you could find another one with ALL of those. |
