Editorial Review
Let's face it. Most vacuums just don't cut it when it comes to really cleaning a home or office. Pesky pet hair embeds deeper in carpet than traditional vacuums go; bits and pieces of tracked-in dirt and debris hunker down under floor trim just out of reach of the latest brush innovations, rendering us to the silliness of handpicking behind that expensive vacuum, filling our pockets with lint, and wondering-who's really the boss Troubles like these made the folks at Eureka get down and dirty and, ultimately, design the Boss Smart-Vac Upright Vacuum.

Offering powerful performance for everyday household cleaning, the Eureka Boss is the solution for people who insist on having a truly clean home. The Boss's Direct Air Control System features an air selector switch that lets you direct all suction either deep into the carpet or to the hose for easy above-the-floor cleaning. The Power Paw brush makes it easy to clean stairs and upholstery, and even claws up embedded pet hair, so Fido can spend more time inside. The motorized brush lets you go from carpet- to bare floor-cleaning with the flick of a switch. The Boss Smart-Vac is powered by a beefy, 12-amp motor that provides plenty of suction power for deep cleaning carpets, and leaves nothing behind on hard floors.

Pretty smart; right Well, here's the really smart part. The Boss Smart-Vac isn't just the best household carpet- and floor-cleaning vacuum on the market; it's also equipped with a unique, sealed HEPA filtration system that captures 99.97 percent of dust, pollen, allergens, and bacteria. So, vacuuming the house doesn't mean you have to dust afterward, or sneeze while you're doing it. Cleaner carpets and cleaner indoor air at the same time!

Plus, the Boss is loaded with user-friendly features to take the frustration out of vacuuming. A wide cleaning path covers a lot of ground quickly before company comes. And, unlike inferior models, the Boss is designed with a brush-view window that shows you how hard it's working, letting you actually see the powerful brush roller remove dirt from carpets and floors. The exclusive dust trap system captures debris and dust in three stages. A handy stretch hose extends to five times its original length for reaching around furniture and sucking the cobwebs off the ceiling. And, a 30-foot cord won't leave you coming up short. The bare floor brush is designed to smoothly glide across wood and tile floors while picking up more dust and debris in corners and along baseboards than any other model. --Brian Olson

First of all I bought this vacuum and have been using it for approximately 6 month. On the positive side, the suction and actually vacuum is great. I love that it uses HEPA filter technology. However there are some negative points that I would like to point out:

1. At first its very difficult to get the vaccum from an upright to a leaning position to vaccum. Its like its stiff. Over time this gets easier.

2. The stretchy hose is not long enough to do some jobs. I find that the vaccum falls alot when I am trying to get into small spaces or when trying to vacuum the stairs.

3. The cord does stay wound around the back off the vacumm very well. Its like its not big enough to hold the whole cord. I end up just leaving the cord loose in the closet b/c I have given up on actually being able to get it to stay put.

4. The vacuum is on the heavier side which makes it difficult to get up and down stairs and also when it falls when you are using the hose.

Overall I still think its a good vacuum for the price but definately has some limitations.

A friend owned the model previous to this and highly recommended this brand; after much searching and reading reviews etc, we eventually settled for this model.

Previously, we owned a Kenmore upright. I spent a fortune on replacing the belts which would melt and burn at any given time. The suction on the Kenmore sucked(hahha). etc etec.

It has been more than three years since we made our purchase. With a household of seven, we use it 1-2 times a day, sometimes more than 3 times depending on what mess took place! My children suffer from pretty nasty allergies, and I have found this vacuum to pick ups extremely well, providing a clean and safe area at all times. After 3 yrs, the suction is still great..

Belts.. still using the original belt that came with the vacuum, and it is still in excellent condition.

Hand tools, attachments..still excellent condition, no cracks,or brittle as mentioned by others

Headlight..still working

The Paw..does a great job with the upholstery and curtains/blinds

Bags.. never liked bagless, very happy with the bags. Don't know where the complainers live, but we can find the bags easily at Walmart, Sears and Target. You can vacuum for weeks and they will not be filled.

Price..this was a factor for us. We wanted something that was affordable and could not justify spending over $200-300.

Weight..ermm, it is heavy, BUT not heavy as I expected it to be after reading some of the negative points. My children vacuum all the time, so if my 8,9,10 yr old's can handle it with ease, I think an adult can too!! We do have a single story, so it may be easier for others to invest in a 2nd vacuum ..

It may not be 100% perfect (tell me what is), but this is a purchase we are extremely satisfied with. BTW, I don't go for the CR reviews, instead rely on reviews by customers like you ..

Well, I read a ton of reviews and decided THE BOSS was the one to get. I've used it almost daily for a few months, and am extremely satisfied. The suction is really strong, be sure there are no itty-bitty toys in the vicinity or kiss them goodbye - yes, I'm guilty. We have hardwood floors and it's so nice to be able to use the vacuum without having to worry about it scratching the floor-the wheels are rubber. The area rugs felt softer after vacuuming them the first time; this new machine sucked out all the dirt that our old vacuum left. I don't seem to have the handle release problem like I've read about in other reviews - could be that it's just easier to step on the lever when you're in socks. Also, the complaints about the weight make me laugh - sure, it's a bit on the heavy side, but you're not carrying the thing around. And the trick to putting the handle back in the upright position is to wait until the brush stops turning. The power paw is great for going over the chairs and sofa, and the crevice tool is perfect for intake vents and baseboards. I would buy it again.

I've had no problems. I just replaced the belt after it broke (after 3 years) and the vacuum is still working great. I like that if something gets stuck in the hose, it's easy to take it apart to get it out.

This vacuum is like vacuuming with a Sherman tank. It is extremly heavy, impossible to use on throw rugs of any size and excessively noisy. I tried to use it in my fly tying room which has scraps of feathers, deer hair etc on the floor. Due to the HEPA filtration vent on the front of the vacuum that blows out a large amount of air, all it did was blow the feathers etc all over the room causing an even bigger mess. Two positive things are that it does have a tremendous amount of suction and it has a long cord. I have had it for a couple of weeks now and I will be placing an add in the paper to get rid of it. I would not recommend this vacuum unless you work out a lot on a weight lifting machine!

2 Star Rating  "Disappointed and disgusted!"2009-09-14

I purchased my Eureka 4870 in September 2007. Now, a week shy of it being only two years old, the handle release lever flew off the other day while vacuuming. It did not get bumped or anything, it just flew off all by itself with a "boing" sound! Of course the warranty is only good for a year, and now I'm faced with having it repaired or purchasing a new vacuum. At least the only local vacuum repair store will do a free estimate.

I'll sum up the rest of what I think of this vacuum (keep in mind I don't vacuum as often as I should, maybe every two weeks, so it's not like this vacuum has a vary hard "life"!)

PROS:
1. It really does pick up dirt and pet hair great.

2. Good hose suction; I haven't had a problem with the hose cracking.

3. Cord is plenty long, however I do have a small house.

4. The brush stops spinning in upright position, so you can "park" it for a minute without melting any carpet).

5. It works well on floors.

CONS:
1. Very heavy, this makes it seem sturdy but it is difficult to maneuver at times. I can't imagine carrying it up and down stairs.

2. Loud, but louder than any other vacuum? I don't know, it didn't bother me a lot (although I can't hear the phone ring while using it) but I'm pretty sure my dog hated the noise!

3. "Headlight" burned out after a few months.

4. "The Paw" attachment bit the dust after a few months (it was good while it worked).

5. Attachments are stupidly mounted on vac. IE: the upholstery attachment fell off all the time right from the first use...really ticked me off so I finally put it up in my closet, with the non-working "Paw"! The dusting brush does not want to go back in it's place, I have to really cram it in, thus mashing some of the bristles.

6. Where you wrap up the cord is just not adequate...the cord falls off half way through my wrapping it up, almost every time. I think it might be because there is more room for the cord at the top, and a pretty narrow space for it at the bottom.

7. The hose is somewhat short. I'm 5'3" and I really had to stretch to get up into the corners of my ceilings.

8. Difficult to adjust height...you have to put the vac into it's upright position to adjust height and to change it from rug to floor, which leads me to...

9. The handle release lever is ridiculously made...I don't know why it's not considered defective since it's very clear that many people have the same issue. You have to put all of your weight on the lever to make it release, and you really have to shove the handle in so it will snap back into it's upright position. This happened right from the first use, and I had hoped it just needed breaking in. Well, "breaking" was the key word because the lever flew off, along with a few metal pieces from underneath, and now I can't use it. One of the metal pieces flew so far away that I can't even find it!

10. Lastly, but certainly not least, the vacuum bags seemed quite small for an upright vac. They are also hard to find (at least in my area). I finally found a package of 10 at Sears. I can't remember what I paid, but it was somewhere between $15 and $20.

There you have it, I hope the info is helpful. After I take it in to the vac repair shop and get their free estimate I'll post an update to my review with the outcome.
