| THE MORE I DEAL WITH THIS THE ANGRIER I GET!!! I bought the VRD-MC3 and the DCR-SR40 because of the way you advertised how you could directly record from one to the other. Not seeing the coded fine print footnote that DOES NOT STATE DIRECTLY THAT ' you can NOT record directly from the DCR-SR40 to the VRD-MC3 on a duel layer DVD" That is stupid! Why would anyone build a video system with a 30 GB drive, then say it is compatible with a burner that they make and then make the largest medium that burner can burn NOT compatible with the video direct record system? When are you going to fix it? I have always thought Sony was "top of the line" but i have been severely disappointed with the last 4 Sony products I have purchased and I think I'm gonna start doing something about it. NO THANK YOU! Bruce A. Clark | |

| This product was just what I was looking for in that it promised to provide a relatively easy way to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. Hookup was a breeze. Directions were generally clear. For the first 100 hours or so of recording--spread over several months, by the way--the product worked fine. Out of about 50 DVDs I only had 3 duds, but then I tried Sony DVDs. (The store was out of memorex.) Since then the product has performed horribly. I contacted tech support twice and got no help at all. Oh, they did refer me to their tech support page which, in essense, has no genuine trouble-shooting advice. I'll probably try some different DVDs but the onus should not be on me to find the right DVD to work with this machine. Besides, it's Sony DVDs which aren't working. Strange. | |
"Finalize errors, bad customer support" | 2007-07-09 |

| I bought this unit in 2006, have used it quite a bit, with some success, but recently it started balking at finalizing DVD+R discs that it used to just fine (same brand, etc). Now I see in here there's all kinds of problems with this drive reported in these Amazon comments. This does have the latest firmware on it. When I inquired about assistance on the Sony support website, they shot back asking the product serial number and mfg date. Just as I suspected, they said sorry, out of warranty range... if you want technical help with the issue, you'll have to pay $20. Forget it. I'm just getting another product that does work... with good reviews. Too bad Sony no longer represents what it used in w/regard to quality products and support. Now it's basically just like any average joe company out there with hit or miss products pretty much at the same statistical rate as the average manufacturer. In this age, review sites such as Amazon's are the only way to go. I try to buy from Amazon too, to support them for providing this great service. Beware some other review sites, as some operators remove negative reviews, but I've seen nor heard of any such rumblings on the Internet about Amazon doing this yet. | |

"Very Temperamental with DVD's" | 2007-03-06 |
| - Reviewed By User: AVD8GW01BUAEE | |
| I purchased this about a year ago from a retail store. It looked like it was a great machine to create DVD's from my home movies and pre-recorded shows on the digital cable box. It worked fine until recently, about two months ago, when I tried copying home movies to the burner. I did nothing different, other than load a clean 16x DVD into the machine, as before. When it went to "finalize the disk", it kept giving a "finalize error" message and ejected the disk. I was using the same Memorex DVD+R disks that were successful in the past, but was totally clueless to what was happening. I DID upgrade the firmware about one month after buying it, and had success with the 8x and 16x DVD's until two months ago. Had a pile of disks "coffee coasters" that were worthless, and was about ready to give this device the heave-ho, until reading another user who had success with the MAXELL DVD-R disks. As of tonight, 3-14-07, the machine is working again, but ONLY because I'm using the Maxell DVD's. This thing is very temperamental, but am hoping it continues to copy my TIVO and home movies. All in all, it's a good idea, but poorly constructed and prone to problems. Try to look around before buying this, even if you get a great deal on it... Best regards | |

| I purchased this unit to record some VHS tapes to DVD. I first tried the SLP setting but was unhappy with the quality of the DVD recording. I then tried the High Quality setting for recording and the quality only improved slightly. This unit does deliver good sound quality in the recordings just that images appear to be fuzzy and slightly out of focus. | |

| I just finished transfering 13 hours of Hi8 tapes to DVD, and also tranfered some old home movies on VHS to DVD. I tried the DVDs I made in 3 different DVD players, and 3 different computers in my home, and each played perfectly! Have no fear, this system is great! Also, I saw that others had complaints about the fact that the unit does not have the abilty to play while recording. I got around that by hooking the the camcorder to the unit, and the TV at the same time, and it all went smooth! Enjoy! Hope this helped. | |
"A Good Dual-Use Recorder, *if* You Find the Right Brand DVD's" | 2006-07-30 |
| - Reviewed By User: A250MQK1WZYK8O | |
| I've had very mixed feelings about this unit. I bought it in mid-2005 because it seemed like a good dual-use recorder. I could record my old videotapes to DVD, and then also easily burn copies by using it as an external computer burner. Well, I've had mixed success but I believe I've ultimately found how to optimize the drive. First of all, I've almost no problems with the external DVD/CD burner aspect. I've had a few bad burns and had a few unreadable discs that wouldn't copy, but I don't think I've had any more problems in this area than the average computer burner. My problem was with the standalone recording, meaning mainly recording from VHS. I had probably at least 25-35% of the discs either error out during recording or, even more frustratingly, record fine but then see a "finalize error" at the very end. I tried all sorts of different things to fix the problem. I stopped using s-video cables and switched to an RCA style video cord. That didn't help. I tried recording at HQ instead of SP mode, but that didn't help. I tried recording straight through entire discs without even hitting pause or stop to edit anything. That didn't work. I was very close to junking it as a standalone recorder. Then I decided to try some different brand DVD-R discs. My problems had been mainly with Memorex, and, shockingly, Sony brand DVD-R's. I tried out Maxell brand DVD-R's (both 8x and 16x), and I've transferred dozens of VHS tape now without any errors. So it really does matter a great deal what brand you choose. I'm sticking to Maxell now. So, if you find the right brand, this recorder works pretty well. But it really shouldn't be that hard to get the thing to work, and I would have hoped at least Sony brand DVD-R's would be easily compatible with the recorder. (The brand issue is with the standalone recording function; as I said, I've had no serious problems at all, with any brand, when using this as a computer external burner). The only main drawback is that you can't monitor what you're recording unless your source (i.e. VCR) has two video outputs (which few do). I ended up buying a $50 video amplifier/splitter than takes the VCR signal in and includes four outputs I can simultaneously output to the DVD recorder and a TV/monitor. If you can, do this as opposed to letting the recorder "automatically" start and stop recording, because this function doesn't work that well. This automated recording actually causes additional problems, because it occasionally will stop recording when a videotape simply has a dropout in it. In other words, the recorder stops whenever it loses the video signal, even for a fraction of a second. I've also occasionally had the recorder tell me that what I'm trying to copy from VHS is copy protected, even though what I was trying to copy was a 10-year-old home movie on videotape. I'd probably give this thing 2 1/2 stars if I could, but I'll go for 3 because it works pretty well once you find a brand that doesn't error out 25-50% of the time (which gets expensive with DVD-R's). | |
"This is a VERY unreliable DVD Recorder (Finalize Error)" | 2006-07-15 |

| I purchased it as a solution to my video tapes. However, I became a very expensive solution. For every four or five DVD's I burn, at least one says "FINALIZE ERROR" meaning i have to trash the DVD and the time spent on burning it. I am wondering if SONY has a replacement plan for "FINALIZE ERROR" DVD's. I would like to know why SONY sells something as unreliable as this unit before testing it with commercial DVD media commonly available!! | |

| Good if works. In average, 1 out of 5 DVD is OK (I am writing this after about 6 month experience). Sometimes doesn't finalize, someties produces DVD that locks in the middle of playing, sometimes locks during finalization process what makes it a challenge to stop and remove DVD. Yes, I am using the most expensive Belkin cable with gold plated connectors and most expensive Sony DVD-R. Uisng digital link to Canon ZR300. Next product from Sony that confirms the fall of this once great manufacturer. | |
