I am a very experienced color printer who uses a large-format Epson pigment printer for my photography. I bought an HP 9980 Deskjet for document printing and desktop photo proofing.
This inkset gives acceptable, if not great, photo reproduction with HP papers that are profiled for this printer. I am very unhappy, however, that I have not found any icc profiles which would enable me to make photo-quality prints using other brands of paper with this inkset. The HP 9980 printer was ridiculously inexpensive but the HP inks and papers are richly-priced for the captive market and come to nearly $2 per 8.5/11 photo print.
"Offensive HP product strategy. Overpriced Ink and HP Paper. Color Fades."

ADDED 4 months later: I have had several photo prints on display in a brightly lit room with no direct sunlight for several months. The color has shifted badly to a greenish tint in the neutral density tones from middle gray to near-white (zones 5-9)
Conclusion: This is worthless as a photo printer and you'll find much better alternatives for document printing. I expected better from HP. I'd change to one star if Amazon would let me edit that part of the review.

Fair Priced, Factory Item. Not refilled that don't work. But because New Item can get refilled at Walgreens Drug.
I love to scrapbook and I like to print the pictures from my computer. I have an HP PSC 2355 and had been using the traditional inks. I was skeptical that it would make a difference, but I as much as I spend on other scrapbooking items I thought it was worth a shot.
I was really pleased with the results. One thing I had to learn the hard way, USE HIGH QUALITY PAPER!!! Now I use HP Premium Plus photo paper. Printing pictures from your home computer is one of the areas where the additional money is worth it.
HP cartridges are the way to go. The only downfall is that if you decide to purchase a cartridge when you DON'T need it, chances are that by the time you use this product, the cartridge itself may not work in your printer (say three months from the day of purchase).
HP is awesome about cartridge replacement. So if it takes a dump, call HP!
