"Better for 3-year-old, not 2-year-old" | 2008-07-18 |

| I bought this for my two-year-old even though the recommended age was for 3-5-year-olds. He did well with some of the more simple activities, and I had to sit with him every time to remind him to press the green GO circle. At three-years-old it is much more appropriate. He has more fun with it now. He's not frustrated because he knows what to do and he can handle the activities on every page. He still prefers me to sit with him - mostly because he's proud of himself and he wants me to see what he can do! But if I can't sit with him for some reason he can play with this toy independently, unlike when he was two. Cartidges and books are easy for him to match and change by himself at three-years-old. |

I've seen a lot of negative reviews of this LeapPad because a child had trouble using it, or it didn't hold the child's attention very long. That's not the toy's fault; you have to have realistic expectations. If your child is under the recommended age of 36 months+, or just has a very active personality, then your child will not get a lot out of this toy! That said, if your child likes to spend a lot of time "reading" books alone, will sit down with a project for a while, and enjoys figuring out new things independently, s/he will probably love it. My daughter turned 4 today and has been enjoying this LeapPad for a very long time. She thrives on the problem solving and showing off her burgeoning writing, drawing, and numbers skills. Because she enjoys independent play and has the attention span to carry through with something for some time, it can occupy her for quite a while if need be. Just don't expect your 2-year-old to fall in love with it right away! There are other LeapPads designed for the younger set which they will enjoy more and find easier to use.
As far as quality, we haven't had any trouble with anything malfunctioning. Still good as new! I gave 4 stars for durability only because a younger child is bound to carry the thing around by the pen, no matter how many times you warn them not to.... and I could see that cord wearing out if that happened enough times. |

"Frustrated with shoddy workmanship" | 2007-06-28 |

My children have all had a my first leap pad. The educational value for this toy is wonderful, it is truly a well thought out way to teach children academic topics in a fun way that they perceive as playing. HOWEVER, I am completely frustrated with the way this toy will not hold up to gentle wear and tear. Unfortunately, I could not give this toy zero stars for durability. The original blue leap pad we had broke (after about a year) and the new yellow school bus leap pad had now had the stylus break and you cannot play with this toy at all. Since we are past the warranty period, we will (I imagine) end up purchasing a new one, as my daughter loves it and uses it all the time at home and in the car on trips.
Please consider this in buying this item. It seems to me that Leap Pad must realize this is occuring, yet they will not do anything about it to increase the lifespan of their toy. How disappointing for the kids and expensive for the parents. I hope that someone who works for Leap Frog reads the reviews on Amazon periodically to understand this is a problem. |

"We loved it at first but the pen needed for operation broke right when the warranty was up!" | 2007-04-15 |

| We do like this toy & I am (sigh) going to probably buy a new one if the replacement pen ($5) doesn't fix it because our kid really misses being able to use it but it is irritating that you go to the Leap pad website and you can see that stylus problems are clearly an issue for them & the warranty is pretty short (90 days) and if the problem reoccurs, I think the warranty on the fix it solution drops to 30 days, I guess so they dont have to keep sending you pens! |

This product was a FIVE STAR to begin with, but three months after gentle (and it was) use, the stylus broke. I have to pay almost 1/4 the price of the original game to get a new one...we've invested in six different games (at roughly $13/each) and now it's useless unless we spend more money to repair something that should never have broken in such a short time.
What's going on with quality control? |

| We love this toy! We gave it to our daughter for Christmas when she was 20 months old. It took her about a month to become interested in it and to learn to push the "GO" for each page. She will sit for up to an hour just playing with the Dora book and the main letter base page. We highly recommned this Leap Pad for kids who love letters and love reading. The one flaw we see is that the On/Off button takes about 3 seconds to respond when turning on the pad and this caused frustration in the beginning. After teaching her to push the button once and move her finger away it's not a problem. |
